Adhik Maas 2023
Namaskar Swagatam Welcome year 2023 has been very happening till now and many incidents have happened in this year and this year is also very important according to our Hindu religion because Adhik Maas is coming this year. By the way, it is also called Malmas and is also known as Purushottam month. But this month is very sacred. It is called the month of Lord Vishnu. This month is going to start from 18th July this time till 16th August and this month is falling in Chaturmas. That’s why doing auspicious work will be prohibited in this month. But the most special thing is that this time this Adhikamas is coming in the month of Shravan. That is why the special importance of the month of Shravan also increases because in this Adhikamas, along with Lord Vishnu, the blessings of Lord Bhole Shankar are going to shower on the devotees of Shiva as well. It is going to be his blessing.
Now how this month is formed, how it comes, then let’s see, according to the Hindu Indian calendar, the Hindu Indian calendar runs according to the calculation of the sun and lunar months, and Adhik Maas is also considered an additional part of the lunar year, which is every 32 months, 16 days. And comes with a difference of eight hours. It appears to balance the difference between the solar year and the lunar year. According to the Indian calculation method, each solar year is of 365 days and about six hours. The same lunar year is of 354 days. There is a difference of about 11 days between the two years and after every three years this difference becomes equal to one month. So to bridge this gap every three years a lunar month comes into existence which we know as additional month. That is why it was named Adhik Maas.
Now why is it called Purushottam month? So there is a story behind this too. Due to being dirty, all the gods refused to become the master of this month. Then Malmas prayed to Lord Vishnu, then Lord Vishnu was pleased with the prayer of this month and gave this month its name Purushottam and the name of Lord Vishnu is also Purushottam. That is why this month was named Purushottam month. That is, this month is the month of devotion to Lord Vishnu, his worship, his meditation. Lord Vishnu has given a boon to this month that in this month, the devotees who will worship Lord Shiva, will do the work of religion, the story of Bhagwat. Will listen, do charity, they will get the never ending renewable fruit. Means this month is considered as the month of grace of Lord Vishnu.
Now Adhikamas also has mythological significance. What is the mythological significance? So you all know the story of Hiranya Kashyap and Prahlad. Once Hiranya Kashyap did severe penance to Brahma ji and Brahma ji also appeared after being pleased. Asked him to ask for a boon, Hiranya Kashyap asked for the boon of immortality. Brahma ji did not give the boon of immortality to anyone. Then Hiranya Kashyap suggested the trick and he said that I want this boon that I should not die in 12 months. The time when I die, neither day time nor evening time, nor be killed by any weapon, nor I be killed by man, woman, nor animal, nor there is death inside my house. I died outside my house. Brahma ji said Aastastu. Hiranya Kashyap was very happy that now I have become immortal. He started considering himself as God and he announced that every person in the city will now worship me. But the pot of sins of every person definitely increases. The pot of sins of Hiranya Kashyap was also filled and for the death of Hiranya Kashyap, Narasimha devotee God incarnated. Whose half body was of lion and half body was of male. He killed Hiranya Kashyap at twilight and as he should not die in any of the 12 months, it was a boon. That’s why in most months. God ensured his death so this in the ears of Hiranya Kashyap rest all of you know about the story of Prahlad and Hiranya Kashyap then the greatness of Adhikamas increased even more since then.
Now let us tell you about what is appropriate for you to do in Adhikamas. According to mythological principles, apart from Yagya Havan, listening, reading and meditating on Shrimad Devi Bhagwat, Shrimad Bhagwat Puran, Vishnu Puran, Bhavishyottar Puran etc. during this month is especially beneficial. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of Adhikamas. That’s why chanting of Lord Vishnu’s mantras is especially beneficial during this entire time. It is believed that Lord Vishnu himself blesses the devotees who chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu in Adhikamas and removes their sins. All their wishes are fulfilled and this time it is in the month of Shravan, so the grace of Lord Shiva will also increase a lot. So in this Adhikamas i.e. in this Adhikamas of the year 2023, you should also read Shivpuran. Mantras of Lord Shiva should be chanted, Mahamrityunjaya mantra should be chanted and chanting of Om Namah Shivay mantra would be particularly beneficial. And anyway, this time this month is coming in Chaturmas. That’s why anyway no such auspicious work will happen in Chaturmas.
Now clothes, jewellery, money, shops, vehicles etc. should not be bought in this month. But if an auspicious time comes in between, then with the advice of a good astrologer, you can buy jewellery. Don’t use bad words at all. House warming, anger, false speech and sexual intercourse etc. should also not be done in this Purushottam month. Wells, boring, mining of pond etc. should also be abandoned in this month. But this is the work which you should not do in this Purushottam month.

Do charity. Do light a lamp of pure cow’s ghee under the Tulsi plant every evening in Adhikamas and worship Tulsi every morning and evening. Peepal tree should be worshiped in Adhikamas. Along with this, do water the Peepal tree every day in Adhikamas. By doing this, Lord Vishnu is quickly pleased. Visit the temple daily in Adhikamas.
