The right puja depends on why the marriage is delayed. Manglik dosha needs Mangal Shanti; a weak Jupiter needs Guru worship and Thursday fasting; an afflicted Venus needs Shukra remedies. Performing a general marriage puja without identifying the cause is the commonest wasted expense I see in this practice.

Why Marriage Gets Delayed — The Six Causes
Families arrive asking for "a puja for marriage" as though there were one. There is not. In eighteen years, delayed marriage traces to one of six causes, and each needs a different remedy.
- Manglik dosha (Mangal dosha). Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The most cited cause in Indian matchmaking, and often over-diagnosed — several cancellations exist.
- Afflicted 7th house or 7th lord. Malefics occupying or aspecting the house of marriage, or the 7th lord badly placed, combust or debilitated.
- Weak or afflicted Jupiter. Jupiter is the primary marriage significator in a woman's chart and governs the husband. Its affliction is a leading cause of delay for women specifically.
- Weak or afflicted Venus. Venus governs the wife in a man's chart and marital happiness generally.
- An adverse dasha. Frequently the real answer, and the one nobody wants to hear. A Saturn, Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha can hold marriage back regardless of an otherwise favourable chart — and no puja shortens a dasha.
- Kaal Sarp or Pitra Dosha. Both are associated with matters that repeatedly fail at the final stage, which is exactly how delayed marriage often presents — proposals that dissolve late.
The practical point: a Mangal Shanti puja for someone whose difficulty is a weak Jupiter will not help. The remedy has to match the cause.
Identifying Your Cause
These are the patterns that point towards each cause. They indicate; only the chart confirms.
| What is happening | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Proposals come and dissolve at the final stage, repeatedly | Manglik dosha, Kaal Sarp, or Pitra Dosha |
| Few or no proposals arrive at all | Weak Jupiter or Venus; afflicted 7th house |
| Proposals arrive but you cannot decide | Rahu affecting the 7th house |
| Family opposition consistently blocks matches | Afflicted 2nd house (family), or Saturn on the 7th |
| Everything stalls, in marriage and elsewhere | An adverse dasha — the whole life phase, not the marriage specifically |
| Guna score consistently fails on matches | Often Bhakoot or Nadi dosha, which have classical cancellations |
A chart reading settles which applies. It costs a fraction of a large puja and it determines whether the puja will work at all.
Which Puja for Which Cause
| Cause | Correct puja | Supporting practice |
|---|---|---|
| Manglik dosha | Mangal Shanti Puja; Kumbh Vivah where severe | Hanuman Chalisa daily, Tuesday fast |
| Afflicted 7th house | Puja for the specific afflicting planet | Depends on which planet |
| Weak Jupiter | Guru Shanti Puja; Brihaspati worship | Thursday fast, Vishnu Sahasranama |
| Weak Venus | Shukra Shanti Puja; Lakshmi Puja | Friday fast, Shri Suktam |
| General delay, cause unclear | Swayamvara Parvathi Puja | Monday Shiva-Parvati worship |
| Kaal Sarp Dosha | Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Puja | Nag Panchami worship, Durga Chalisa |
| Pitra Dosha | Pitra Dosh Nivaran; Shradh in Pitru Paksha | Feed crows, serve parents, Amavasya donation |
| Multiple afflictions | Navagraha Shanti Puja | Navagraha Stotram daily |
Swayamvara Parvathi Puja
This is the puja most specifically associated with marriage, and the one worth understanding in detail.
Its basis is the story of Parvati, who performed severe penance to obtain Shiva as her husband and succeeded where nothing else had worked. The puja invokes her in the form Swayamvara Parvathi — the goddess who chooses and obtains her own husband — and it is prescribed for delayed marriage, obstacles to a match, and for those seeking a suitable partner.
It is used across causes, which makes it the sensible choice when the specific affliction is unclear, and it is performed for both men and women despite the goddess association.
The core mantra:
ॐ ह्रीं योगिनी योगिनी योगेश्वरी योग भयंकरी सकल स्थावर जंगमस्य
मुख हृदयं मम वशं आकर्षय आकर्षय स्वाहा
Traditionally performed on a Monday, a Friday, during Navratri, or on Shivratri, with the japa count completed and followed by donation. Where families cannot attend in person, we perform it as an E-Puja with sankalp in the person's own name, gotra and nakshatra.
Mangal Shanti Puja and Kumbh Vivah
Mangal Shanti Puja is the remedy for Manglik dosha. It pacifies Mars rather than strengthening it, and is performed on a Tuesday with red items — masoor dal, jaggery, red cloth, copper — and Hanuman worship, Hanuman being the traditional protector against Mars's severity.
Kumbh Vivah is the more substantial remedy, reserved for severe Manglik dosha. The person is symbolically married to a pot (kumbh), a banana tree, or an idol of Vishnu before the actual marriage, so that the dosha's effect is discharged into the symbolic union.
Two things worth knowing before spending on either:
- Two Manglik charts usually cancel each other. If both partners are Manglik, no remedy may be needed at all. This is standard and widely accepted, and it is the single most common reason a family is spending unnecessarily.
- Several cancellations exist — Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars aspected by Jupiter, certain sign placements, and Saturn's aspect on Mars. Manglik dosha also weakens considerably after age 28 in classical reckoning.
Our complete Manglik dosha guide covers detection and cancellation in full. Establish whether the dosha is genuinely active before booking a Kumbh Vivah.
Guru and Shukra Remedies
These two are underused relative to how often they are the actual cause.
For a weak Jupiter — the leading cause of marriage delay in a woman's chart:
- Thursday fast, taken as a full cycle, with yellow foods and without salt
- Guru beej mantra — ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः, 108 times on Thursday mornings
- Vishnu Sahasranama on Thursdays
- Donate chana dal, turmeric, yellow cloth, ghee and books
- Respect teachers and elders — Jupiter is the guru, and disrespect there weakens it more than any missed ritual
- Apply a turmeric or saffron tilak on Thursdays
For a weak Venus — the corresponding cause in a man's chart:
- Friday fast with white foods
- Shukra beej mantra — ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः, 108 times on Friday mornings
- Shri Suktam or Kanakadhara Stotram on Fridays
- Donate rice, curd, ghee, white cloth, silver and perfume
- Feed young girls (kanya bhojan) — specifically prescribed for marital matters
- Keep yourself and your home clean and pleasant; Venus does not remain in neglect
- Respect women — classical texts are explicit on this regarding Venus
Vrat — The Fasting Remedies
Fasting is the most accessible marriage remedy and requires no priest or expense.
| Vrat | When | For |
|---|---|---|
| Solah Somvar | 16 consecutive Mondays | The classic vrat for marriage; Parvati obtained Shiva through it. See our guide |
| Mangala Gauri | Tuesdays in Shravan | Unmarried women for early marriage; married for husband's longevity |
| Guruvar vrat | Thursdays | Weak Jupiter; delayed marriage in a woman's chart |
| Shukravar vrat | Fridays | Weak Venus; Santoshi Mata worship |
| Hartalika Teej | Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya | Unmarried women seeking a good husband |
| Katyayani vrat | Margashirsha month | Specifically for obtaining a desired husband |
Two practical notes. Take a fast within your physical capacity — the classical texts permit fruit-based or single-meal fasting, and a fast that damages your health earns nothing. And complete the cycle you begin; a half-kept Solah Somvar is worth less than four Mondays kept properly.
Mantras for Marriage
Katyayani mantra — the most specific mantra for obtaining a husband, recited by unmarried women:
ॐ कात्यायनि महामाये महायोगिन्यधीश्वरि।
नन्दगोपसुतं देवि पतिं मे कुरु ते नमः॥
Shiva-Parvati mantra — for a harmonious marriage, recited by both:
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Gauri Shankar mantra:
ॐ गौरी शंकराय नमः
For a weak Jupiter (women):
ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः
For a weak Venus (men):
ॐ शुं शुक्राय नमः
Swayamvara Parvathi mantra — given in full in the section above.
Recite 108 times daily, at the same hour, for a minimum of 40 days. Consistency is what produces results here, not the number of different mantras attempted.
What to Do Daily
For those who want something to begin immediately without a priest or expense:
- Light a ghee lamp before Shiva and Parvati each evening. Together — the pair, not Shiva alone.
- Recite your mantra 108 times at a fixed hour.
- Offer water to a Shivling on Mondays, or daily if you keep one at home.
- Wear yellow on Thursdays (for Jupiter) or white on Fridays (for Venus), per your chart.
- Serve your parents personally. An afflicted 2nd house — family — blocks more matches than most people realise.
- Feed young girls where you can, especially on Fridays and during Navratri.
- Keep your room and home clean. Both Venus and Jupiter respond to order, and this is the remedy people find most surprising and most immediately actionable.
A Gauri Shankar Rudraksha — two naturally joined beads representing Shiva and Parvati — is the traditional bead for marriage and marital harmony. It requires energising and is best chosen after a chart reading; see our Rudraksha guide.
When to Perform Them
| Occasion | Why |
|---|---|
| Shravan month, especially Mondays | The most auspicious period of the year for Shiva-Parvati worship. See our Sawan guide |
| Navratri | Nine days of Devi worship; Swayamvara Parvathi Puja is traditionally performed here |
| Mahashivratri | The single strongest night for Shiva worship |
| Hartalika Teej | Specifically commemorates Parvati obtaining Shiva |
| Thursdays and Fridays | Jupiter and Venus days respectively, per your chart's need |
| Any Monday | For beginning Solah Somvar or general Shiva worship |
Avoid beginning during Pitru Paksha, in Adhik Maas, or during Chaturmas for anything requiring an auspicious muhurat. Note also that Venus retrograde and Venus combust are both traditionally avoided for fixing an actual wedding date — see our Venus retrograde guide.
An Honest Word on Expectations
I include this because families in this situation are vulnerable and the puja trade knows it.
No puja produces a specific person. Anyone promising marriage to a named individual, or marriage within a fixed number of months for a fee, is not practising astrology. What remedies genuinely do is remove obstruction — proposals begin arriving, family opposition softens, matters that stalled start moving. The rest is still your decision and your effort.
Sometimes the answer is the dasha. If an adverse Mahadasha is running, marriage may be delayed regardless of remedies, and honest practice says so. Remedies reduce the difficulty of that period; they do not shorten it. A practitioner who cannot tell you this is either not reading the dasha or not telling you what it says.
Do not stop looking while doing remedies. The commonest error I see is families suspending the search until the puja "works". Remedies clear the path; someone still has to walk it.
And check the practical side. Sometimes the delay has entirely ordinary causes — an unrealistic requirement list, a limited search, a family reputation issue, or a genuine mismatch between expectation and circumstance. A competent astrologer will say when the chart shows nothing significant, and that answer is worth as much as any remedy.
