Chandra Arghya is offering water or milk to the visible Moon, standing, in a thin stream, on a Monday or Purnima evening. It is the standard remedy for a weak or afflicted Moon — the placement behind most cases of anxiety, insomnia and emotional instability I see. It costs nothing and needs no priest.

What Arghya Means
Arghya is the offering of water — a fundamental act of Vedic worship, given to deities, to the Sun, to the Moon and to ancestors. It is one of the sixteen upacharas (services) of formal puja, and it survives in daily practice long after most of the others have fallen away.
The offering is made to the visible body. Arghya to the Sun is given at sunrise, facing the Sun; arghya to the Moon is given when the Moon is visible in the sky, facing it. This is not incidental — the tradition treats the visible celestial body as the deity's own form, so the offering is made directly rather than to an image.
Two things distinguish Chandra Arghya from most remedies in this field: it costs nothing, and it requires no priest, no initiation and no ceremony. A vessel of water and a visible Moon is the entire requirement. That is one reason I prescribe it more often than almost anything else.
Why the Moon Matters More Than People Think
In Vedic astrology the Moon (Chandra) is not a minor planet. It is the karaka of the mind — manas — and the entire Vedic system is calculated from the Moon sign rather than the Sun sign. Dashas run from the Moon's nakshatra. Daily and monthly predictions depend on the Moon's transit. Compatibility matching is entirely Moon-based.
What the Moon governs:
- The mind, emotions and mental stability
- The mother, and the relationship with her
- Bodily fluids — blood, lymph, hormonal balance
- Sleep and dreams
- Memory and intuition
- Comfort, home and a sense of belonging
The practical consequence, and the reason this article exists: a great many problems that clients bring to me as career, marriage or financial questions turn out to rest on an afflicted Moon. Someone who cannot sleep, cannot settle their mind and cannot hold a decision does not have a career problem — they have a Chandra problem, and the career difficulty follows from it. Treat the Moon and the rest often eases.
Who Needs This Remedy
Chandra Arghya is indicated when the chart shows:
- Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Grahan yoga) — the most distressing Moon affliction
- Moon conjunct or aspected by Saturn — produces persistent low mood
- Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, particularly when afflicted
- Kemadruma yoga — no planet in the houses on either side of the Moon
- A waning Moon in the birth chart, close to Amavasya
- Cancer Moon sign or ascendant — the Moon is the sign lord
- Moon debilitated in Scorpio
- A Chandra Mahadasha or Antardasha running
And it is indicated by experience when someone reports persistent anxiety, disturbed sleep, mood instability, emotional over-reaction, or a strained relationship with their mother — provided the chart agrees.
Signs of a Weak or Afflicted Moon
| Area | How it presents |
|---|---|
| Mind | Anxiety without cause, overthinking, indecision, mood swings |
| Sleep | Difficulty falling asleep, waking at night, disturbing dreams |
| Emotions | Over-reaction to small things; difficulty recovering after an upset |
| Mother | Distance, friction, or persistent worry about her health |
| Body | Water retention, hormonal imbalance, chest and stomach complaints, anaemia |
| Relationships | Difficulty feeling settled or secure with people |
| Home | A sense of not belonging anywhere; frequent relocation without satisfaction |
An honest and important caveat. These are also the symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders and thyroid dysfunction — all of which are medical conditions with effective treatment. An afflicted Moon in the chart and a medical condition are not alternatives; they frequently describe the same thing from two directions. Where symptoms are severe or persistent, see a doctor. Chandra Arghya sits alongside proper care, not instead of it, and any astrologer who says otherwise is doing harm.
How to Offer Arghya
- Bathe and wear clean clothes — white or light colours suit this remedy.
- Wait for the Moon to be visible. This is the one non-negotiable condition; arghya is offered to the visible Moon, not at a fixed clock time.
- Stand facing the Moon, outdoors or at a window or terrace.
- Take a silver vessel if available — silver is the Moon's metal. Copper or steel is acceptable; avoid iron.
- Fill it with water or raw milk. Add a few white flowers, a little rice, and a pinch of sugar or white sandalwood.
- Raise it to forehead height with both hands.
- Pour slowly in a thin stream, so that the moonlight passes through the falling water. Look at the Moon through the stream.
- Recite the Chandra mantra while pouring — given below.
- Offer three times.
- Join your hands, take a moment, and state your prayer plainly in your own words.
- Circle the spot once if you are able, and take the remaining water on your head or drink a little.
The whole thing takes five minutes. Where you pour matters little — a plant, a tulsi pot or clean ground is fine. Do not pour it where people walk.
What to Offer
| Offering | Note |
|---|---|
| Water | The basic and always-appropriate offering |
| Raw milk | Preferred where the Moon is weak; milk is the Moon's own substance |
| Water with a little milk | The commonest practical form |
| White flowers | Jasmine, white lotus, or any white bloom |
| Rice (akshat) | Unbroken grains |
| White sandalwood | A pinch of paste or powder |
| Sugar or misri | A small quantity |
| Vessel | Silver ideal; copper or steel acceptable; not iron |
Iron is Saturn's metal and Saturn is not friendly to the Moon — this is the one material restriction worth observing.
Timing — Day, Tithi and Moon Phase
| Occasion | Why |
|---|---|
| Any Monday evening | Monday is the Moon's day; the standard choice for regular practice |
| Purnima (full moon) | The Moon at full strength — the single best night of each month |
| Sharad Purnima | The Ashwin full moon; considered the most auspicious of the year |
| Shukla Paksha generally | The waxing fortnight, when the Moon is strengthening |
| Chaturthi evenings | Sankashti and Karva Chauth, where moonrise is the ritual centre |
| During a Chandra dasha | As a sustained daily or weekly practice |
Avoid offering during a lunar eclipse, and on Amavasya when the Moon is not visible at all. During Krishna Paksha the practice is still valid but the tradition gives more weight to the waxing fortnight.
A practical note that matters: the Moon rises later each night through the waxing fortnight. On Purnima it rises around sunset; a few days before, it is already up in the afternoon. Check a panchang or simply look — the requirement is visibility, not a clock time.
Mantras
Chandra beej mantra — the primary one, recited while pouring:
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Simple name mantra:
ॐ सोमाय नमः
Vedic mantra:
ॐ इमं देवा असपत्नं सुवध्वं महते क्षत्राय महते ज्यैष्ठ्याय।
महते जानराज्यायेन्द्रस्येन्द्रियाय॥
Puranic mantra:
दधिशङ्खतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम्।
नमामि शशिनं सोमं शम्भोर्मुकुटभूषणम्॥
Om Namah Shivaya is also appropriate and widely used, since Shiva wears the Moon on his head and is therefore called Somanath — lord of the Moon. For clients who find Sanskrit difficult, this is what I suggest. See our Panchakshari guide.
Recite 11, 21 or 108 times. Commit to a 40-day cycle before assessing anything.
Arghya at Karva Chauth and Other Vrats
Several observances place moon-arghya at their centre, and it is worth knowing that these are the same act in a specific context.
- Karva Chauth — married women fast from dawn and break the fast only after sighting the Moon and offering arghya, viewing the Moon and then the husband through a sieve. The arghya is the ritual pivot of the whole day.
- Sankashti Chaturthi — the monthly Ganesha observance, where the fast is broken after moonrise and arghya.
- Sharad Purnima — kheer is left in the moonlight overnight and consumed the following morning, the moonlight itself being treated as the blessing.
- Ganesh Chaturthi — the reverse case, where viewing the Moon is traditionally avoided per the Puranic account of the curse; this is the one day arghya is not offered.
For a woman keeping Karva Chauth who also has an afflicted Moon in her chart, the observance carries a double relevance — and continuing the arghya on Mondays through the year is a natural extension of it.
Supporting Moon Remedies
Arghya works better as part of a set. These are the other Moon remedies I prescribe, all inexpensive.
- Monday fast (Somvar vrat) — with Shiva worship; see our Somvar vrat guide.
- Shiva worship — Shiva wears the Moon, so Shiva remedies are Moon remedies. Offer raw milk on a Shivling on Mondays.
- Donate on Mondays — rice, milk, white cloth, silver, sugar, curd. To someone who needs them.
- Serve your mother personally. The Moon signifies the mother; this is a direct remedy rather than a moral aside, and in my experience one of the more effective.
- Keep water clean at home, especially in the north-east. Repair leaking taps.
- Wear white or silver on Mondays.
- Pearl (Moti) — the Moon's gemstone, and the lowest-risk of the nine. Still, only after a chart reading, and never with Blue Sapphire or Hessonite.
- Protect your sleep. Fixed hours, no screens late. Unglamorous, and for an afflicted Moon it does more than most rituals.
Cautions and Common Questions
What if the Moon is not visible? Cloud cover is common in monsoon months. Offer the arghya facing the direction where the Moon should be, or postpone to the next clear night. The tradition permits offering to the direction when the body is obscured.
Can women offer arghya? Yes, without restriction. Karva Chauth is itself a women's observance built entirely around it.
Can it be done during menstruation? Practices vary by family. Many teachers permit mental recitation and offering; others suspend it. Follow your own custom.
Does it have to be outdoors? No — a window, balcony or terrace is fine, provided the Moon is visible to you.
What if I miss a Monday? Continue the following week. If you are keeping a 40-day cycle, add days at the end rather than restarting.
How long before results? Judge internal change at 40 days — steadier sleep and less reactivity are what clients report first. External change takes longer. If nothing has shifted after six months of consistent practice, the Moon is probably not the afflicted planet in your chart.
The one caution worth repeating. If you are experiencing severe or persistent anxiety, insomnia or low mood, treat that as a medical matter first. Chandra remedies are genuinely useful alongside proper treatment, and genuinely inadequate as a replacement for it. A practitioner who tells you a puja removes the need for a doctor is not helping you.

Check Whether the Moon Is Your Actual Affliction
Chandra Arghya costs nothing and can be started tonight. What a reading adds is confirming that the Moon is the source — because if the difficulty traces to Saturn, Rahu or Mercury, a different remedy applies.
- Kundali Vishleshan — 25-minute reading covering your Moon's condition, Grahan yoga and running dasha
- Chandra Shanti E-Puja — with sankalp in your name, gotra and nakshatra
- Narmadeshwar Shivling — for Monday milk abhishek at home
