In eighteen years of practice, the remedies that produce visible change are almost always the cheapest ones — daily mantra, donation, service, and correcting conduct. Gemstones are the most expensive and the most often wrong. This guide ranks remedies by what I have actually seen work, and says plainly where each one fails.

How Remedies Actually Work
Before ranking anything, it is worth being honest about the mechanism, because inflated claims are what discredit the whole subject.
Classical astrology does not claim that a remedy deletes karma. What the texts describe — and what I observe — is closer to rescheduling a debt than cancelling it. A difficult period still runs, but its intensity softens, the capacity to act returns, and the sense of being obstructed at every turn lifts.
Three principles follow, and they explain most of what comes later:
- Remedies work through behaviour more than objects. The traditional prescriptions for Saturn are service and honesty; for Jupiter, respect for teachers; for Rahu, refusing deception. These are not moral decorations attached to astrology — they are the prescriptions, and they outperform every ritual I have seen.
- Consistency beats intensity. A five-minute daily practice sustained for a year does more than one elaborate ceremony. Every client who has reported a genuine change was doing something daily.
- A remedy must match the actual affliction. This is where most money is wasted. Financial obstruction caused by Saturn does not respond to a Venus remedy, however good that remedy is.
Tier One — The Remedies That Change Things
These four are what I prescribe first, in every case, regardless of chart. All are free.
1. Daily mantra japa
The single most effective remedy available, and the least expensive. The relevant planet's beej mantra, 108 times, at the same time each day.
Why it works better than occasional ritual: repetition builds an actual discipline, and the discipline itself alters how you meet difficulty. Whether one takes a devotional or a psychological view of the mechanism, the observed result is the same — people who maintain a daily japa handle adverse periods measurably better than those who do not.
Start with 40 days. If you cannot manage 108 repetitions, do 11. An 11-count sustained for a year beats a 108-count abandoned in a month.
2. Service to those with less than you
Specifically: the elderly, labourers, the disabled, the poor, and anyone in a position to give you nothing in return.
This is the primary Saturn remedy, and Saturn is the planet behind most of the long, grinding difficulties people bring to me. It is also, in my experience, the remedy with the highest ratio of result to cost — which is precisely why it is rarely recommended by those who sell remedies.
3. Donation (daan), correctly directed
Each planet has its own items and its own day. Given to a person who needs them, not into a collection box.
The classical framework treats donation as the step that actually settles the karmic account — a puja without the daan is considered incomplete. Practically, matching the item to the planet matters: black sesame and iron on Saturday for Saturn, chana dal and turmeric on Thursday for Jupiter, rice and white cloth on Monday for the Moon.
4. Correcting the specific conduct
The most uncomfortable and the most effective. Each planet is weakened by a particular behaviour, and no ritual compensates for continuing it.
| Planet | Weakened by |
|---|---|
| Sun | Disrespect towards father, elders and authority |
| Moon | Disrespect or neglect of mother; unstable habits |
| Mars | Uncontrolled anger; violence in speech |
| Mercury | Dishonesty in speech and business; mocking others |
| Jupiter | Disrespect towards teachers; contempt for knowledge |
| Venus | Disrespect towards women; unfair dealing; squalor |
| Saturn | Cheating anyone of their wages or their due; laziness |
| Rahu | Deception, including self-deception; intoxication |
| Ketu | Neglect of ancestral duty; disrespect to spiritual practice |
Of these, one stands out. Withholding someone's rightful wages or dues is the behaviour most strongly associated in the classical texts with a severe Saturn period, and in eighteen years of reading charts alongside life histories, it holds with uncomfortable regularity.
Tier Two — Reliable Support
These work well, but as support to Tier One rather than as replacements for it.
- Fasting (vrat) on the planet's day — Monday for the Moon, Tuesday for Mars, Thursday for Jupiter, Saturday for Saturn. Take it as a full cycle rather than abandoning it after three weeks. Fasting is about restraint, not hunger; a fast kept while quarrelling with the household achieves nothing.
- Feeding animals — cows for Jupiter and Venus, crows and dogs for Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, birds generally. Simple, daily, and consistently effective.
- Stotra recitation — Hanuman Chalisa for Saturn and Mars, Vishnu Sahasranama for Jupiter, Shri Suktam for Venus, Aditya Hridaya for the Sun, Durga Saptashati for Rahu, Ganesh Atharvashirsha for Ketu, Mahamrityunjaya for health and the 8th house.
- Water offering to the rising sun — for a weak Sun. Copper vessel, dawn, poured in a thin stream. Five minutes, no cost, and one of the most reliably reported remedies I give.
- Yantra installation — Shree Yantra for Venus and wealth, Navagraha Yantra for general pacification. Requires correct placement and energising, otherwise it is an ornament. See our Shree Yantra guide.
- Rudraksha — matched to the afflicted planet. 5 Mukhi is safe for anyone; the rest need a chart reading. See the full Rudraksha guide.
Tier Three — Situational
Genuinely useful in the right case, frequently oversold in the wrong one.
- Puja and havan — appropriate for a specific identified affliction, at the start of a difficult dasha, or before a major undertaking. A properly performed puja includes correct sankalp, the full japa count and the donations. A ceremony completed in forty minutes has skipped the japa, which is the substance of it. See our Navagraha Puja guide.
- Kumbh Vivah — for severe Manglik dosha, where indicated.
- Narayan Bali and Tripindi Shradh — for unnatural death in the family line, or three generations of neglected rites. See Pitra Dosha.
- Pilgrimage — Gaya for ancestral matters, Trimbakeshwar for Narayan Bali, Shani Shingnapur for Saturn.
- Colour and metal — wearing the planet's colour on its day, or its metal. Mild, harmless, and worth doing alongside the rest.
- Vastu correction — where the difficulty genuinely traces to the building rather than the chart. Real, but frequently invoked when the chart is the actual cause.
Gemstones — Where Most Money Is Wasted
I place gemstones here deliberately, and it costs me business to do so.
Gemstones are the most expensive category of remedy and the one most often prescribed wrongly. The reason is structural: they carry the highest margin, so there is a commercial incentive to recommend them that does not exist for donating black sesame.
The mechanism people misunderstand. A gemstone does not pacify its planet. It strengthens it. That helps when the planet is weak and well-intentioned in your chart. It actively harms when the planet is already strong, or rules a difficult house for your ascendant.
| Stone | Planet | Risk level |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Sapphire (Neelam) | Saturn | Highest. Acts within days. Never wear without a full reading and a 3-day trial. |
| Hessonite (Gomed) | Rahu | High. Amplifies restlessness if Rahu is already strong. |
| Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) | Ketu | High. Same caution. |
| Ruby (Manik) | Sun | Moderate. Increases ego and blood pressure if the Sun is strong. |
| Red Coral (Moonga) | Mars | Moderate. Amplifies anger if Mars is afflicted. |
| Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Jupiter | Lower, but wrong for Taurus and Libra ascendants. |
| Pearl (Moti) | Moon | Lowest risk. Generally calming. |
| Emerald (Panna) | Mercury | Low. |
| Diamond / White Sapphire | Venus | Low to moderate. |
Combinations that must be avoided without expert advice: Blue Sapphire with Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral or Yellow Sapphire. Hessonite or Cat's Eye with any of those four. Emerald with Pearl or Red Coral. The rule underneath is planetary friendship — Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are hostile to the Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter.
My standing advice: if you have not had your chart read, do not buy a gemstone. Use Tier One instead. Those carry no downside whatsoever, and in most cases they are what actually produces the change.

Remedies by Problem
The honest caveat first: the same symptom can arise from several different planetary causes, so this table is a starting point rather than a prescription. Financial obstruction from Saturn and from Venus require completely different remedies.
| Problem | Usual planetary cause | First remedies |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed marriage | Jupiter, Venus, 7th house, Manglik | Thursday fast, Shiva-Parvati worship, Katyayani mantra; check Manglik status |
| Financial blockage | Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, 2nd/11th house | Shri Suktam Fridays, Shree Yantra, clear debts, honest dealing |
| Career stagnation | Sun, Saturn, 10th house | Water to the sun daily, Saturday service, punctuality, finish what you start |
| Anxiety, insomnia | Moon, Rahu, Mercury | Monday Shiva worship, Chandra mantra, fixed sleep hours, reduce screens |
| Chronic illness | Saturn, 6th/8th house | Mahamrityunjaya daily, medical care, Saturday donation |
| Repeated obstruction at the last step | Ketu, 9th house, ancestral | Pitru Paksha rites, feed crows, serve parents |
| Difficulty with children | Jupiter, 5th house, Ketu | Santan Gopal mantra, Thursday fast, medical investigation alongside |
| Court cases, disputes | Mars, Saturn, 6th house | Hanuman Chalisa daily, Tuesday remedies, avoid escalation |
| Addiction | Rahu, afflicted Moon | Durga Chalisa, feed dogs, and — necessarily — medical or de-addiction support |
| Property disputes | Mars, Rahu, 4th house | Tuesday Hanuman worship, documentation, avoid informal arrangements |
How Long Remedies Take
Wrongly set expectations are the main reason people abandon remedies that were working.
| Period | What is realistic |
|---|---|
| First 7–10 days | Usually nothing external. Occasionally a settling of mind. |
| 40 days | The traditional minimum, and roughly when internal change becomes noticeable — steadier decisions, less reactivity. |
| 3 months | External movement begins. Stalled matters start moving. |
| 6–12 months | Substantive change, where the remedy matched the affliction. |
| Full dasha period | For a difficult Mahadasha, remedies are maintained throughout — years, not months. |
Judge nothing before 40 days. Judge nothing external before three months.
Why a Remedy Fails
When a client tells me a remedy did nothing, the cause is almost always one of these six, in this order of frequency:
- Wrong planet. The remedy was for Venus; the affliction was Saturn. This is the commonest cause by a wide margin, and it is why a chart reading should precede spending.
- Not sustained. Performed for two weeks, then abandoned. Remedies are practices, not transactions.
- The conduct was not corrected. Reciting Hanuman Chalisa while continuing to withhold someone's wages does not work. The ritual supports the correction; it does not replace it.
- Judged too early. Abandoned at three weeks, before the 40-day minimum.
- Expected to replace action. A remedy for career obstruction does not apply for the job on your behalf. It clears the obstruction so that applying works.
- Expected to override the dasha. Remedies reduce intensity within a difficult period. They do not convert an adverse Mahadasha into a favourable one, and anyone promising that is not practising astrology.
How to Spot Exploitation
This section exists because the remedy trade contains a great deal of it, and clients deserve to be able to protect themselves.
Warning signs:
- A guaranteed specific outcome — a named person in marriage, a particular job, a sum of money. No competent practitioner promises this.
- Urgency and fear. "Do this within three days or something terrible will happen." Fear is a sales technique, not an astrological finding.
- Escalating costs. A small consultation leading to an ever-larger puja, then a gemstone, then a bigger puja.
- A gemstone recommended in the first conversation, before the chart has been examined properly.
- Refusal to explain the reasoning. You are entitled to know which planet, which house, and why this remedy.
- Claims of removing karma entirely, or of a remedy that works without any effort from you.
- Pressure to keep it secret from family.
What a straight practitioner does: names the afflicted planet and house, explains why the remedy fits, prescribes the free remedies first, gives a realistic timeframe, states plainly what astrology cannot do, and tells you when the problem is medical, legal or financial rather than astrological.
If you take one thing from this article, take this: the most effective remedies cost nothing. Daily mantra, service, donation, and correcting your conduct. Anyone who leads with an expensive object before those is selling rather than advising.
