After wiping it with clean cloth Pure Herbal perfume is to be applied followed by saffron sandalwood paste. The Lingam can be then put on the Jalhari. शिव का अर्थ है ‘ कल्याण करने वाले ‘ और लिंग का अर्थ है ‘ बनाने वाले ‘ | अत: शिवलिंग पूजा में हम हमारे सम्पूर्ण जगत के निर्माता सर्व शक्तिमान शिव की पूजा करते है | शिवलिंग भगवान शिव के निराकार रूप की महिमा को बताता है | शिव ही  आदि ,अनादी है और अंत भी | सम्पूर्ण जगत का आधार  शिव ही है | सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्मांड लिंग रूप में है और जलधारी पृथ्वी है | शब्दों के कई अर्थ होते है | कोटि का मतलब प्रकार भी तो करोड़ भी | इसी तरह लिंग का अर्थ भी बहुत सारे है | इसे आप शिवलिंग के सम्बन्ध में जननांग से ना ले |

शिव की पूजा शिवलिंग के रूप में सदियों से चली आ रही है | रामायण और महाभारत काल में भी शिवलिंग पूजा के बारे में बताया गया है | शिवलिंग में त्रिदेवो की शक्ति निहित है | मूल में ब्रह्मा जी , मध्य में विष्णु और ऊपर भगवान शंकर | जलधारी के रूप में शक्ति | अत: शिवलिंग की पूजा से आप सभी देवी देवताओ की कृपा के पात्र बनते है | समस्त देवी देवताओ की पूजा के समान है शिव के निराकार शिवलिंग की पूजा | शिवलिंग की पूजा करने वाले भक्त को धर्म अर्थ काम मोक्ष सभी की प्राप्ति सजग हो जाती है |

जब यह सम्पूर्ण जगत नष्ट होगा तो यह शिवलिंग में समा जायेगा और फिर इसी शिवलिंग से नए संसार का जन्म होगा |
