Moti Ganesh : Pearls are sensitive to acids, dryness and humidity and so are less durable than other gems.
Since time immemorial, pearls have been considered as a symbol of beauty and purity. A pure pearl is a smooth, glowing round stone, found inside the shell of an oyster, a species of bivalve mollusk. The rare pearls are greatly valued as precious jewels. Pearls may be white, black, red, blue, brown, yellowish, or pink in colour. They are created, when a foreign body enters the mollusks (shellfish) between the mantel and the shell. This makes the mollusk feel an irritation, which it cures by coating it with a substance called nacre, layer by layer, which keeps growing till it becomes a full-fledged pearl.
Pearls are mainly found in the Persian Gulf, off the coasts of Sri Lanka, Australia, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, China, the Pacific Isles, Venezuela, the Red Sea, Panama, and Southern India. In the present age, the best pearls come from the Persian Gulf, Myanmar (Burma), Australia and Indonesia. The biggest producer of these lovely gems is Australia, followed by Indonesia and the Philippines. The Red Sea and the Gulf of California and Florida are also known for Oyster pearls.
Natural pearls can be ten times more expensive than the cultured or cultivated varieties, because of their lustre and rarity. Because the natural ones are so rare, most of them we find today have been cultivated, which the pearl farmer does by placing a tiny bit of the shell into the oyster’s flesh. This stimulates the oyster to secrete nacre, and thus begins the process to form a pearl. The oyster is then returned to the sea for several years, while the pearl develops. A good quality pearl is translucent and lustrous. The quality of the pearl’s lustre helps determine its value.
