Rahu Puja is performed to reduce confusion, sudden loss and unexplained fear — the signature effects of an afflicted Rahu. It is worth doing when a Rahu dasha begins, when Grahan yoga is present, or when Kaal Sarp Dosha is active. Saturday or Amavasya, with Durga worship at its centre.

What Rahu Actually Is
Rahu is not a physical planet. It is the north lunar node — one of the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Ketu is the south node, and the two sit permanently 180 degrees apart.
The Puranic account explains its character better than any technical description. During the churning of the ocean, the asura Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods and drank the amrita. Vishnu severed his head with the Sudarshana chakra — but having tasted immortality, he did not die. The head became Rahu, the body became Ketu.
So Rahu is a head without a body: appetite with no capacity for satisfaction, desire that consumes without being filled.
That is not merely poetic. In eighteen years of practice it is the single most accurate description of what an afflicted Rahu produces. Clients describe it almost identically each time: "I got what I wanted and it still felt empty." The wanting intensifies; the satisfaction never arrives.
| Nature | Shadow planet (chhaya graha); north lunar node |
|---|---|
| Deity | Durga; Bhairava |
| Day | Saturday (Wednesday in some traditions) |
| Gemstone | Hessonite (Gomed) |
| Donation | Coconut, urad dal, mustard oil, blue or black cloth, sesame |
| Mahadasha | 18 years |
| Transit | About 18 months per sign; always retrograde |
When Rahu Puja Is Genuinely Needed
I put this section early because Rahu puja is frequently sold to people who do not need it.
It is genuinely indicated when:
- A Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha is beginning. The Mahadasha runs 18 years, so this is worth marking.
- Grahan yoga is present — Rahu conjunct the Sun or the Moon in the birth chart.
- Kaal Sarp Dosha is active — all seven visible planets on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, with the dasha supporting it.
- Rahu is transiting your Moon sign, ascendant, or the 8th house.
- Addiction, unexplained fear, or an undiagnosable illness is present alongside chart indications.
- Repeated deception or unexplained damage to reputation.
It is not needed simply because you have Rahu somewhere in your chart — everyone does — or because a symptom sounds Rahu-like. Anxiety, insomnia and indecision have many causes, astrological and medical. A chart reading costs a fraction of a large puja and settles whether Rahu is actually the source.
What an Afflicted Rahu Looks Like
Rahu's signature differs from the other malefics. Saturn produces delay; Mars produces conflict. Rahu produces confusion.
- Loss of clarity in decision-making. Right and wrong blur. Later you cannot reconstruct why you chose as you did.
- Fear without an object. Anxiety that does not attach to anything specific; restlessness at night.
- Addiction — alcohol, tobacco, gambling, compulsive phone use. Rahu is the primary significator.
- Being deceived — cheated in business, falsely accused, betrayed by someone trusted.
- Sudden loss with no warning. Rahu does not give notice.
- Illness that tests normal. Allergies, skin conditions, insomnia, panic. The investigations come back clear while the suffering continues.
- Attraction to foreign things — travel, work abroad, unconventional paths. This is often the constructive face.
- Dreams of snakes, cremation grounds, or shadowy figures.
- Dissatisfaction after achievement. The defining signature.
An honest caveat: none of these is exclusive to Rahu. The indication only becomes meaningful when the chart and the life pattern agree.
Combinations in the Birth Chart
| Combination | Effect |
|---|---|
| Rahu–Sun (Grahan yoga) | Confidence and the father; also indicates Pitra Dosha |
| Rahu–Moon (Grahan yoga) | The most distressing — mental unrest, fear, insomnia, confusion |
| Rahu–Mars (Angarak yoga) | Explosive anger, accidents, aggression |
| Rahu–Jupiter (Chandal yoga) | Judgement clouded; disrespect towards teachers; loss of discrimination |
| Rahu–Saturn | Prolonged obstruction and deep discouragement |
| Rahu in 1, 4, 7, 8 | Self, home, marriage and longevity respectively |
| Rahu in 3, 6, 10, 11 | Favourable — see the final section |
Why the Dasha Decides Everything
This is the most practically useful thing on this page, and it is what separates a real reading from a symptom checklist.
Having a Rahu combination and having it active are different things. A great many people carry Grahan yoga and experience nothing notable from it, because the Rahu dasha never ran during a vulnerable period of their lives.
Rahu's Mahadasha lasts 18 years. Its Antardashas within other Mahadashas are shorter. When one of these begins, dormant chart combinations activate — and that is when people arrive in my consulting room describing the symptoms above.
Two consequences follow, both useful:
- You can know when it ends. Families under Rahu-driven difficulty cope measurably better when they know the period has a defined end date rather than feeling it is permanent.
- Remedies begun at the start of the dasha work better than remedies begun in year twelve.
In my experience this timing information is the most valuable thing astrology offers on Rahu — more than any puja.
What the Puja Does — and Does Not Do
What it does. The classical framing is that a graha shanti does not delete karma but softens how it is delivered — a debt rescheduled rather than cancelled. What clients actually report is not dramatic: decisions become easier, the diffuse fear reduces, and the sense of being obstructed from every direction lifts. That is a real benefit.
What it does not do. It does not shorten an 18-year dasha, produce a specific outcome, or work in place of medical treatment. Where addiction is involved, a puja alongside proper de-addiction support is reasonable; a puja instead of it is dangerous, and I say so plainly to families.
The Vidhi
Timing: Saturday, Amavasya, or during an eclipse. Evening suits Rahu better than morning. Rahu Kaal is not prohibited for this puja and is considered suitable in some traditions.
- Sankalp — name, gotra, nakshatra and the specific purpose, stated plainly. This is what makes the puja yours.
- Ganesh Puja — first in every Vedic rite, and doubly relevant since Ganesha is also associated with Rahu.
- Kalash Sthapana.
- Install the Rahu yantra or idol — south-west direction, on blue or black cloth.
- Abhishek — water, milk and mustard oil.
- Offerings — blue flowers, coconut, urad dal, sesame, blue cloth, a mustard oil lamp.
- Japa — the Rahu beej mantra. The classical purascharana count is 18,000; a personal puja commonly uses 1,008 or 108.
- Durga worship — Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa. Durga is Rahu's presiding deity and this is the core of the rite.
- Havan — with durva grass and sesame offerings.
- Daan — coconut, urad dal, sesame, mustard oil, blue or black cloth. In classical framing this is the step that settles the karmic account, so it is not a formality.
- Aarti and prasad.
Where attending in person is not possible, we perform this as an E-Puja with the sankalp taken in your own name, gotra and nakshatra.
Samagri
| Grain | Urad dal (black gram) |
|---|---|
| Cloth | Blue or black |
| Flowers | Blue flowers; kaner |
| Special | Whole coconut, sesame, mustard oil, durva grass |
| Metal | Lead, or panchdhatu |
| Lamp | Mustard oil |
| Samidha | Durva grass |
| Naivedya | Coconut, sesame laddu |
| Direction | South-west |
Mantras
Beej mantra — for daily japa:
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Vedic mantra:
ॐ कयानश्चित्र आ भुवदूती सदावृधः सखा।
कया शचिष्ठया वृता॥
Puranic mantra:
अर्धकायं महावीर्यं चंद्रादित्यविमर्दनम्।
सिंहिकागर्भसंभूतं तं राहुं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥
Simple name mantra:
ॐ रां राहवे नमः
The purascharana count is 18,000. For ongoing practice, 108 repetitions on Saturday evening facing south-west is sufficient. Commit to 40 days before assessing anything.
Home Remedies That Work
These cost nothing and, in my experience, do more than an occasional expensive ceremony because they are daily.
Daily
- Feed stray dogs. The simplest and most consistently effective Rahu remedy there is.
- Recite Durga Chalisa. Durga is Rahu's presiding deity.
- Gayatri mantra, 108 times facing east at sunrise.
- Do not lie. This is a remedy, not a moral aside — Rahu's difficulties arrive overwhelmingly through deception and impatience, including self-deception.
Saturdays
- Float a coconut in flowing water — the classic Rahu remedy.
- Donate urad dal, sesame, mustard oil and blue or black cloth — to someone who needs them, not into a box.
- Light a mustard oil lamp at a Bhairava temple.
- Rahu beej mantra, 108 times.
General
- Keep your home clean and uncluttered. Rahu gains strength in disorder. This sounds trivial and is one of the more effective measures.
- Reduce screen time. The most common modern form of Rahu is the phone.
- Give up one intoxicant. Rahu and addiction are directly linked; abandoning even one does more than any ritual.
- Keep silver at home, and a piece of coconut near where you sleep if insomnia is the presenting problem.
Hessonite — A Warning
Hessonite (Gomed) is Rahu's gemstone and belongs in the same category as Blue Sapphire: powerful, fast-acting, and genuinely capable of harm when worn without a chart reading.
Gomed does not pacify Rahu. It strengthens it. If Rahu is already dominant in your chart, wearing Gomed amplifies exactly the restlessness, obsession and poor judgement you were trying to reduce. I see these cases regularly.
Where it is appropriate, the rules are strict — silver or panchdhatu, middle finger, Saturday, waxing moon, and never with Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral or Yellow Sapphire, since Rahu is hostile to the Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter. A three-day trial is traditional and sensible; if sleep worsens, disputes begin or losses occur, remove it.
If you want a Rahu remedy without that risk, use the mantras and donations above. They carry no downside. A gemstone should follow a chart reading — never an article, including this one.
Where Rahu Is Actually Good
This section matters because fear of Rahu is disproportionate to what it actually does.
Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses is genuinely constructive. In the 6th it defeats enemies, debt and disease rather than suffering them. In the 11th it multiplies income, often from sources that did not exist a year earlier. In the 10th it produces sudden visibility and promotion. In the 3rd it gives courage and persuasive power.
Rahu is also the planet of unconventional achievement. In technology, foreign trade, aviation, film, politics, research and pharmaceuticals, the charts of successful people frequently show a strong Rahu. It rewards those willing to work outside established paths.
And it has a genuine spiritual dimension — serious students of tantra, astrology, psychology and the occult are very often Rahu-prominent.
One closing observation I give every client. Rahu's damage is usually self-inflicted. It does not send misfortune so much as manufacture a craving strong enough to override judgement, and the loss follows from the decision made while excited. That is also the remedy: whichever house Rahu occupies is precisely where you should distrust your own enthusiasm and verify independently. That single discipline is worth more than any gemstone.
