What Kundli Milan Actually Measures

Kundli Milan — also called Guna Milan, Ashtakoot Milan or horoscope matching — compares two birth charts for marriage compatibility. In the north Indian tradition it uses the Ashtakoot system: eight categories, or kootas, carrying 36 points in total.

Here is the fact that surprises most people, and it is the most important thing on this page: the entire 36-guna calculation is derived from the Moon's position alone — specifically from each person's Moon sign and Nakshatra. It does not look at the Sun, at Mars, at the 7th house, or at any other planet.

That is not a flaw in the system. Ashtakoot was designed to assess a specific thing: emotional, mental and physiological compatibility between two people, which the Moon and Nakshatra genuinely do govern. It was never designed to predict whether a marriage would last, whether there would be children, or whether the couple would be financially secure. Those questions live in other parts of the chart.

So when a calculator returns 28 out of 36 and a family treats it as a green light, they are reading a partial answer as a complete one. The score is real. Its scope is narrow.

The Eight Kootas and Their 36 Gunas

Notice how the points are weighted. Nadi alone carries 8 points and Bhakoot 7 — together nearly half the total. This is why two charts can fail badly on the score while being fine on six of the eight factors. A single Bhakoot or Nadi mismatch removes fifteen points at once, and it is the commonest reason a match that feels right on every human measure comes back as "incompatible".

What Your Score Actually Means

The traditional minimum is 18 out of 36. That threshold is sound as a rough filter, but treating it as a pass mark causes real harm. In eighteen years I have seen good marriages at 16 gunas and bitter ones at 30. Which points were lost matters more than how many.

A couple losing 4 points on Yoni have a physical-compatibility note to be aware of. A couple losing 8 points on Nadi have a genuine constitutional concern that classical astrology links to progeny and health. Same arithmetic, entirely different conversation.

What Online Calculators Cannot See

This is the section worth reading twice, because it explains why families sometimes proceed on a 30-guna match and encounter difficulties nobody predicted.

• Manglik dosha (Mangal dosha). Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Entirely absent from the 36-guna calculation, and one of the most consequential factors in Indian matchmaking. Two Manglik charts often cancel each other; one Manglik and one not requires remedies.
• The 7th house itself. The house of marriage, its lord, and the planets aspecting it. A chart with a badly afflicted 7th house can score 32 gunas and still indicate marital difficulty.
• The Navamsa chart (D9). In classical practice the Navamsa is the primary divisional chart for marriage — arguably more important than the main chart for this purpose. No standard calculator uses it.
• The running dasha of both people. Timing decides outcomes. A marriage entered during an adverse dasha for either partner faces pressure the guna score knows nothing about.
• Venus and Jupiter placement. Venus governs marital happiness for a man; Jupiter governs the husband in a woman's chart. Both matter and neither appears in the score.
• Longevity and health indications in either chart.
• Progeny indications — the 5th house and its lord.
• Dasha sandhi — whether either person is at a vulnerable junction between planetary periods at the proposed time.

None of this is a criticism of online tools. A calculator does the Ashtakoot arithmetic faster and more reliably than a person. The mistake is asking it a question it was never built to answer.

Bhakoot and Nadi Dosha — And Their Exceptions

Because these two carry 15 of the 36 points, they are responsible for most "failed" matches. Both have classical exceptions that calculators rarely apply.

Bhakoot dosha arises when the two Moon signs are 6–8, 2–12 or 5–9 apart. Traditional cancellations (Bhakoot dosha nivaran) include:

• The Moon-sign lords are the same planet, or are natural friends
• Graha Maitri scores full marks
• The 5–9 relationship, which many authorities treat as benign or even favourable despite the point loss

Nadi dosha arises when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya) — classically linked to health and progeny concerns. Recognised cancellations include:

• Both born in the same Nakshatra but different padas
• Same Moon sign but different Nakshatras
• Same Nakshatra but different Moon signs
• The Nakshatra lords being the same planet

These exceptions are standard classical astrology, not a modern softening. A competent astrologer applies them; an automated score usually does not. This single point is the most common reason I am able to clear a match a family had already given up on.

Manglik Dosha in Matching

Manglik dosha deserves its own note because it causes more distress in Indian matchmaking than the guna score does, and it is widely misunderstood.

A person is Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The classical concern is that Mars — the planet of aggression, heat and separation — sitting in a marriage-related house creates friction, delay or, in severe combinations, worse.

What is genuinely true in practice:

• Two Manglik charts usually cancel. This is standard and widely accepted.
• Manglik dosha reduces with age — classical texts hold it weakens considerably after 28.
• Several cancellations exist: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars aspected by Jupiter, certain sign placements, and Saturn's aspect on Mars.
• Remedies are effective and well established — Mangal Shanti puja, Kumbh Vivah, Hanuman worship, and Tuesday observance.

A Low Score Is Not a Verdict

Families call me most often in one specific situation: a match everyone likes has come back at 14 or 16 gunas, and the elders want to refuse it.

Before accepting that outcome, three things are worth establishing:

1. Are the birth details correct? A birth time wrong by even twenty minutes can change the Moon's Nakshatra and therefore several kootas. Wrong data is the commonest cause of a wrong score.
2. Which kootas failed? Losing 15 points to Bhakoot and Nadi together is a completely different situation from losing them across five smaller factors.
3. Do the classical exceptions apply? As set out above, Bhakoot and Nadi dosha both have recognised cancellations that automated scores skip.

In a meaningful proportion of the low-score matches brought to me, one of those three changes the answer. That is not me being lenient — it is the difference between running an algorithm and reading a chart.

Why High-Score Marriages Sometimes Fail

The reverse situation is less discussed and more painful. A couple matched at 30 or more gunas, married with everyone's blessing, and in serious difficulty within a few years.

When I examine these charts, the cause is almost always one of four things — and all four are invisible to the guna score:

• An afflicted 7th house in one or both charts — malefics in or aspecting the house of marriage.
• A weak or afflicted Venus in the man's chart, or afflicted Jupiter in the woman's.
• An adverse Navamsa — the divisional chart that classical astrology treats as primary for marriage.
• Marriage during an adverse dasha, particularly a Rahu, Ketu or badly placed Saturn period for either partner.

This is the honest case for a full Kundli Milan reading rather than a calculator. The score tells you about emotional and physical compatibility. These four factors tell you about the marriage.

What a Proper Matching Checks

When I do a Kundli Milan for a client, the Ashtakoot score is the starting point, not the conclusion. The full sequence is:

1. Verify birth data for both, and rectify the time where it is uncertain
2. Ashtakoot Milan — the 36 gunas, with classical exceptions applied
3. Manglik status for both, and whether cancellation applies
4. 7th house analysis — occupants, lord, aspects, in both charts
5. Navamsa (D9) comparison — the primary marriage divisional chart
6. Venus and Jupiter assessment in the respective charts
7. 5th house and progeny indications
8. Dasha analysis — what period each person is running, and whether the proposed timing is sound
9. Longevity and health indications
10. Marriage Muhurat — selecting the date, once the match is cleared

Steps 3 to 9 are where the meaningful answers are, and none of them appear in a guna score.

If You Do Not Know the Birth Time

This comes up constantly, particularly for people born at home or in the 1980s and earlier.

Without an accurate birth time, the Moon's Nakshatra may be uncertain, which affects Yoni, Tara, Gana and Nadi directly. The Moon moves about one degree every two hours, so a two-hour uncertainty can shift the Nakshatra and change the score materially.

Two practical routes exist. Birth time rectification works backwards from known life events — marriage, job changes, births, illnesses — to narrow the likely time; it is standard practice and reasonably reliable. Alternatively, Prashna (horary) astrology answers a specific question from the moment it is asked, without needing a birth chart at all, and is genuinely useful for a straightforward "should we proceed" question.

What is not advisable is entering a guessed time into a calculator and treating the output as fact. That produces a confident number built on nothing.

Remedies for a Difficult Match

Where a match is otherwise right and the chart shows a specific difficulty, remedies are genuinely useful. The correct remedy depends on which dosha is present.

• For Manglik dosha — Mangal Shanti puja, Kumbh Vivah where indicated, Hanuman Chalisa daily, Tuesday fasting, and donation of red masoor dal and jaggery on Tuesdays.
• For Nadi dosha — Nadi dosha nivaran puja, and the classical practice of gold donation (suvarna daan) before the wedding.
• For Bhakoot dosha — worship of the Moon-sign lords of both charts, and a Bhakoot dosha nivaran puja.
• For an afflicted 7th house — remedies for the specific afflicting planet, plus strengthening of Venus or Jupiter as appropriate to the chart.
• For general marital harmony — Gauri Shankar Rudraksha, worship of Shiva and Parvati together on Mondays, and recitation of the Katyayani mantra by the woman before marriage.
• Muhurat. The most underrated remedy of all. A well-chosen wedding date genuinely mitigates chart difficulties, and a badly chosen one creates them where none existed.

Remedies are prescribed against a specific finding. A general puja performed without knowing which dosha is present is unlikely to help, and it is why I do not recommend buying remedy packages before a chart has been read.

• As a first filter when several proposals are under consideration. A quick score helps prioritise which to look at properly.
