What Bhadra Actually Is

Bhadra — also called Vishti Karana — is one of the eleven karanas of the Hindu calendar. A karana is half a tithi, so Bhadra occupies half of a lunar day, typically lasting somewhere between five and fifteen hours depending on the tithi's length.

Of the eleven karanas, Vishti is the only one treated as inauspicious. During it, the classical texts prescribe postponing auspicious undertakings — weddings, house-warmings, business launches, journeys and the beginning of any significant work.

What makes Bhadra practically important, rather than an obscure calendrical detail, is that it determines the timing of two major festivals every year. If you have ever wondered why Raksha Bandhan rakhi-tying has a specific window announced each year, or why Holika Dahan is sometimes late at night, the answer is Bhadra.

The Story — Saturn's Sister

The Puranic account explains both Bhadra's character and how it is pacified.

Bhadra is described as a daughter of Surya (the Sun) and Chhaya, and therefore the sister of Shani (Saturn) and of Yama. She was born with a fearsome appearance and a disruptive nature — the texts describe her as obstructing yajnas, disturbing auspicious rites and creating obstacles wherever she appeared.

Concerned, Surya approached Brahma. Brahma's solution was not to destroy her but to give her a place: she was allotted a fixed position in the calendar — one half of specific tithis — and told that during that period she could exercise her nature, but outside it she must not interfere. Anyone beginning auspicious work during her allotted period would face obstruction; anyone who waited would be untroubled.

The relationship to Saturn is not incidental. Both are children of the Sun; both delay rather than destroy; both are pacified by patience rather than force. This is why Shani remedies and Bhadra remedies overlap, and why Bhadra falls under Saturn's governance in the classical scheme.

When Bhadra Occurs

Bhadra follows a fixed pattern through the lunar month. It occupies half of these tithis:

So Bhadra occurs roughly eight times a month. Its exact clock timing depends on when the tithi begins and ends at your location, which is why a panchang for your city is necessary rather than a general table.

The Three Lokas — The Rule Most People Miss

This is the single most important thing on this page, and it is routinely omitted from articles that simply say "avoid Bhadra".

Bhadra resides in one of three worlds depending on the Moon's sign at the time, and it only obstructs earthly matters when it is on earth.

The classical position is explicit: Bhadra afflicts the world in which it resides. When it is in heaven or the netherworld, human undertakings on earth are unaffected — some texts even describe those periods as favourable.

The practical consequence is significant. A substantial proportion of Bhadra periods are harmless for earthly work. Families who postpone everything at every Bhadra are postponing unnecessarily most of the time. This is exactly the kind of detail a competent muhurat calculation includes and a generic calendar app does not.

Bhadra Mukh and Punchh

Bhadra is further divided into parts, personified as a body. The classical distinction:

• Bhadra Mukh (the face) — the most inauspicious portion, roughly the first five ghatis. This is the part genuinely to avoid.
• Bhadra Kantha (throat), Hriday (heart), Nabhi (navel), Kati (waist) — intermediate portions.
• Bhadra Punchh (the tail) — the final portion, roughly three ghatis. This is traditionally considered auspicious, and work begun during Bhadra Punchh is said to succeed.

That last point surprises people. The tail of Bhadra is not merely tolerable — several classical authorities treat it as a favourable window, on the reasoning that one who passes through the difficulty emerges with its blessing. Muhurat specialists use Bhadra Punchh deliberately when a date cannot otherwise be moved.

What to Avoid

During Bhadra on earth (Mrityu loka), the traditional prohibitions are:

• Marriage and engagement
• Griha Pravesh — entering a new home
• Starting a new business or signing significant contracts
• Beginning a journey, particularly a long one
• Mundan, Upanayan and other samskaras
• Tying rakhi on Raksha Bandhan
• Holika Dahan
• Buying property or a vehicle
• Beginning construction
• Any new auspicious undertaking

What Is Permitted

Bhadra is not a general prohibition on activity, and this distinction matters — otherwise it becomes an excuse for paralysis.

Explicitly permitted during Bhadra:

• All routine work — your job, ongoing business, daily tasks
• Medical treatment and surgery where needed. Health does not wait for a karana.
• Ongoing matters already in motion
• Study and examinations
• Court appearances and legal proceedings you do not control
• Puja, japa and spiritual practice — indeed Bhadra is considered suitable for these
• Tantric and Shakti sadhana — some traditions regard Bhadra as favourable for these specifically
• Removing something — closing an account, ending a bad arrangement, demolition
• Travel already begun

The underlying logic: Bhadra obstructs beginnings. Anything already running, anything necessary, and anything whose purpose is removal rather than creation, is unaffected.

Why It Shifts Raksha Bandhan and Holi

These two festivals are where most people encounter Bhadra, so it is worth explaining the mechanism.

Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima. Bhadra occupies the first half of Purnima. So in years when Purnima begins in the morning, Bhadra runs through much of the day, and rakhi cannot be tied until it ends — which is why the announced muhurat is sometimes in the afternoon or evening.

The traditional reasoning given is that Shurpanakha tied a rakhi to Ravana during Bhadra, and Ravana's destruction followed. Whatever weight one gives the story, the rule derived from it is firmly observed.

Holika Dahan falls on Phalguna Purnima, and the same logic applies — Bhadra occupying the first half of Purnima frequently pushes the bonfire to late night. Holika Dahan must additionally be performed during Pradosh kaal and after Bhadra ends, which is why the window is sometimes very narrow.

Both festivals require checking the year's panchang rather than assuming a customary time.

How to Find Bhadra Timings

Bhadra timings depend on the tithi's start and end at your specific location, so they cannot be read from a general table.

• A Nirayana panchang for your city — the authoritative source
• Drik Panchang or a comparable sidereal ephemeris
• Any Kundli software set to Lahiri ayanamsa

When you check, note three things rather than one: when Bhadra starts and ends, which loka it occupies (from the Moon's sign), and when Bhadra Punchh falls. A period that a calendar flags red may be entirely harmless once those are known.

Remedies If Work Cannot Be Postponed

Sometimes a date genuinely cannot move — a court date, a booked venue, a surgery, a flight. The tradition provides for this rather than leaving people stuck.

• Check the loka first. If Bhadra is in heaven or the netherworld, there is nothing to remedy.
• Use Bhadra Punchh — the tail portion, which is itself considered auspicious.
• Recite the Bhadra stotra or the twelve names of Bhadra before beginning.
• Worship Shani — Bhadra is his sister. Mustard oil at a Shani temple, black sesame donation, and the Shani beej mantra.
• Recite Hanuman Chalisa — the standard protection for anything Saturn-related.
• Donate black sesame, urad dal, iron or black cloth before starting.
• Do a token beginning earlier at an auspicious muhurat, and complete the main work during Bhadra. This device — symbolic commencement outside the inauspicious period — is well established in muhurat practice.

Keeping It in Proportion

I include this because Bhadra anxiety has become common, and it does more harm than the karana does.

Bhadra is one factor in muhurat, not the whole of it. A proper muhurat weighs the tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, the day, the Moon's position, and the individual's own chart. Bhadra is one input. A date that is otherwise excellent is not ruined by it, particularly when Bhadra is not on earth.

It does not apply to your daily life. Going to work, cooking, travelling to the office, attending a meeting, taking medicine — none of this is affected. Bhadra concerns the ceremonial commencement of significant new undertakings.

Most Bhadra periods are harmless for earthly matters — only four of the twelve Moon signs place it on earth. Checking the loka before postponing anything saves a great deal of unnecessary disruption.

And the dasha outweighs the muhurat. A business launched at a perfect muhurat during an adverse Mahadasha will still struggle; one launched during Bhadra in a favourable dasha generally does fine. Muhurat optimises; it does not override. Anyone telling you a single Bhadra period will ruin your marriage or your business has the proportions wrong.
