Importance of Kush

According to Guru Maa Nidhi Ji Shrimali, in every puja, Lord Ganesha is worshiped first and Doob or Durva is used in the worship of Ganesha. Durva is also dear to Shiva and Parvati, but there is no mention of the use of any other grass in the worship of other gods and goddesses. Kush is the only grass which is not only used in the worship rituals of every God and Goddess, but it is also considered very effective in the rituals performed for ancestors and ghosts. Sprinkling water with Kush and using Kush in the construction of pavilions etc. shows how useful Kush is in every task in life. You must have seen that whether there is any religious ritual or any puja or any sanskar, your Pandit ji i.e. your priest makes you wear the sacred thread of Kush. This is a ring made of sacred Kush. Apart from Havan puja, the sacred thread is also worn during ancestral invocation, Shraddha rituals or other ancestral peace rituals. The purpose of wearing it or getting it done is that at that time the body and mind of the seeker becomes pure and the seeker becomes safe from external obstacles. Kushagrahani Amavasya

Why is it called Kushgrahani Amavasya

On this day, to perform puja, rituals or Shraddha throughout the year, grass called Kusha is plucked from rivers, plains etc. and brought home. If this grass, which is used in religious activities, is collected on this day, it bears virtuous fruits throughout the year. Without Kusha grass, any religious worship is considered fruitless. Therefore Kusha grass is used prominently in Hindu worship system. Any Kusha plucked on this day is considered sacred for the whole year. Because of being extremely sacred, it has a name Pavitri too.
