Sawan Shivratri fasting method

Devotees should eat only once on the day of Trayodashi, a day before Shivaratri fast. After completing the early morning rituals on Shivratri, devotees should take a vow to observe a fast for the whole day and eat food the next day and seek his blessings from Lord Shiva so that they can complete the fast without interruption. In the evening of Shivratri, devotees should take a bath before going to Shiva Puja or temple. Shiva worship should be done at night, and the next day after bathing again, breaking the fast and eating food. For maximum benefits, devotees should break the fast between daylight hours and Chaturdashi Tithi. Some say that devotees should break the fast after Chaturdashi Tithi. Sawan Shivratri fasting story

The glory of Sawan Shivratri has been described in Shiva Purana. According to Guru Maa Nidhi Ji Shrimali, a hunter named Gurudruh used to live in the forest of Varanasi. One day while roaming in the forest it was morning till night but he could not find any prey. That day was Shivratri Tithi. He started resting on a belpatra tree in the forest itself, when a deer came there. As soon as he tried to shoot an arrow, a belpatra and the rain water accumulated on the tree fell on the Shivling installed below. Unknowingly the hunter worshiped the first Prahar of Shivratri.

This is how the worship of the second phase happened

The gaze of the deer fell on the hunter. He told the hunter that the children were waiting for him at home. After listening to the deer, the hunter left it. After this Hirni’s sister passed there. Then the Gurudruh offered his bow and arrow. Again Belpatra and water fell on the Shivling. Such second phase was worshipped. That deer also talked about leaving her kids at a safe place and coming again, then the Gurudruh felt pity on her too. Shravan Shivratri

Unknowingly worshiped Shiva while waiting for the prey

After a while a deer came in search of his doe. Then the whole process happened unknowingly and Shivling was worshiped in the third Prahar also. After some time all the three deer and deer came to him because of the promise made to the hunter. Seeing all these, the Gurudruh became very happy. Before he killed everyone, the worship of the fourth Prahar was also completed.

Shiv ji gave special blessings to the hunter

Without eating or drinking anything from morning to night, unknowingly, Shivratri fasting and worship happened. In this way he got freedom from sins and he also gave up the idea of killing deer. With the effect of which his sins were destroyed immediately. As soon as the sun rose, he gave up the idea of killing all the deer. Only then Lord Shankar appeared from Shivling and gave him a boon saying that Lord Ram would come to his house in Tretayug and after that he would be free from the bondage of birth and death.
