Nazar Battu (नज़र बट्टू) is a traditional Indian amulet specifically designed to ward off the evil eye (nazar) and protect the wearer (or the home) from the negative intentions, envy, and harmful gazes of others. The Nazar Battu is typically a small, handcrafted charm made of black thread, dried lemon, green chili, a camphor crystal, and sometimes a small piece of black agarwood, all bound together with sacred red thread (mauli). The black thread absorbs and neutralizes negative energy, the dried lemon and green chili are believed to "cut" the evil eye, the camphor burns away residual negativity, and the mauli ties the protection with the wearer's own sankalpa (intention). Nazar Battu is widely used in North Indian households — hung at the entrance of the home, on the main door of a shop, in the nursery of a newborn baby, in the car to protect travellers, and on the puja room door. The amulet is especially popular during the naming ceremony (namkaran) of a newborn, where it is tied to the cradle or hung above the bed to protect the child from nazar until they grow strong enough.
