Shaligram Original Stone: Shaligram is a type of fossil stone, used to invoke God as the representative of God. Shaligram is usually collected from the bottom or banks of the holy river. Shiva devotees use an almost round or oval shaligram as the Shiva linga to perform the puja.
Vaishnavites (Hindus) use a spherical, usually black colored ammonoid fossil found in the sacred river Gandaki as a representative of Vishnu.

Just as the fire hidden within the wood is always manifested by chanting, similarly Lord Vishnu is especially expressed in the Shaligrama rock even when it is spread everywhere. One who worships twelve Shaligram idols with the rock-cut Gomti cycle of Dwarka is revered in Vaikuntha folk.
Uses: In Hinduism, anthropomorphic religious idols are usually represented, although symbols are also used equally. In the form of Shaligram, the abstract form of God is represented on which humans can easily focus and as Lord Krishna has said in the Gita,
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते॥”
—Srimadbhagavad Gita, Chapter 12, Verse 5
The pure meaning is as follows: “For those whose minds are connected with the indirect, impersonal qualities of the divine, progress is very difficult. It is always difficult for a body with a body to progress in this discipline.”
