A Word First
People arrive at this topic in one of three situations, and they need different things.
Some are in a difficult first marriage and want to know whether it will end. Some are already separated, divorced or widowed and want to know whether another marriage is indicated. Some are considering a match with someone who has been married before.
All three deserve a straight answer rather than either fatalism or false comfort. So two things at the outset.
A chart showing a second marriage does not require one. Astrology reads potential and probability, not compulsion. I have read many charts with clear second-marriage indications where the first marriage held, usually because both people worked at it. The indication describes a tendency in the chart, not a sentence passed on a person.
And no chart obliges anyone to remain in a marriage that is harming them. Where there is violence, abuse or genuine danger, that is not an astrological question and I will not treat it as one. Safety first, always, and remedies afterwards.
Which Houses Are Read
The reasoning here is a piece of classical technique worth understanding, because it explains why the 9th house — usually the house of fortune and father — becomes the marriage house in this context.
In Vedic astrology, matters are read from the relevant house and then from that house's own derived houses. The 7th house is marriage. The second marriage is therefore read from the second house counted from the 7th — which is the 8th — and more commonly from the 9th house, being the 7th house from the 3rd, and treated in most schools as the house of the second spouse.

These are the combinations classical texts associate with more than one marriage. As always, one factor alone means little; a pattern of several matters.

- The 7th lord placed in a dual sign, or in the 9th house.
- Two or more planets in the 7th house, particularly of different natures.
- A strong, well-aspected 9th house alongside an afflicted 7th.

- Venus conjunct Rahu or Ketu, or Venus with Mars in certain configurations.
- The 7th lord and 9th lord connected — by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
- Rahu in the 7th house — associated with unconventional partnerships and with more than one.
- Saturn aspecting the 7th with a strong 9th — the first marriage delayed or strained, the second more settled.
Note what is not on that list: Manglik dosha. Manglik dosha delays and strains marriage; it is not in itself an indication of a second one, and it is frequently misrepresented as such.
What Indicates the First Marriage Ending
A second marriage requires the first to end, so this is read separately.

An important qualification. These combinations appear in a great many charts where the marriage does not end. They indicate pressure, not outcome. What determines outcome is the dasha running, the strength of the benefics, and — genuinely — what the two people do. I have watched clients with severe combinations hold a marriage together and clients with mild ones let it go.
Timing — When It Is Likely
Timing is where astrology is most useful in this question, because a chart may show a second marriage without saying when, and the answer is almost always in the dasha.
A second marriage typically occurs during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of:
- The 9th lord — the primary period for it
- Venus in a man's chart, or Jupiter in a woman's
- A planet placed in the 9th house
- The 7th lord, where it is connected to the 9th
Transits confirm rather than cause. Jupiter transiting the 7th or 9th house from the Moon sign is the standard supporting transit, and marriages cluster there.

Will the Second Marriage Work
The question everyone actually asks. What the chart shows:
- A strong, benefic-aspected 9th house is the best single indicator that a second marriage will be more settled than the first.
- Jupiter aspecting the 9th is particularly favourable.
- An afflicted 9th house alongside an afflicted 7th is a genuine caution — it suggests the same pattern repeating, and this is the case where remedies and honest self-examination matter most.
- The Navamsa chart is more informative than the main chart for this question.
- The dasha at the time of the second marriage matters as much as the houses. A marriage entered during an adverse dasha starts under pressure regardless of a good chart.
One observation from practice that sits outside the technical reading, and which I offer as observation rather than astrology. Second marriages that work are generally the ones where the person understood their own contribution to the first marriage ending. Where that reflection has not happened, charts with excellent 9th houses still produce a second difficulty. Astrology describes the terrain; it does not walk it for you.

My practical advice to families in this situation: do not refuse a match on the guna score alone. Where a Spouse Has Died
This situation is read differently and deserves separate treatment, because families often apply the wrong framework and cause unnecessary pain.
Where the first marriage ended in bereavement rather than separation, the relevant chart factors are the 8th house and the longevity indications, not the combinations that indicate marital discord. A person whose spouse died does not necessarily carry any indication of a difficult 7th house at all.
Two things I say to families repeatedly. First, remarriage after bereavement carries no astrological prohibition in classical texts, and the social discomfort that sometimes surrounds it is cultural rather than shastric. Second, where a chart is described as carrying a "dosha" that caused a spouse's death, that reading should be treated with real scepticism — it is a claim that causes profound harm, is frequently made without proper analysis, and is one of the more damaging forms of exploitation in this field.
Where genuine longevity-related afflictions exist in a chart, Mahamrityunjaya practices and appropriate remedies are prescribed before a subsequent marriage. That is a considered remedial step, not a judgement on the person.
Where Children Are Involved
The 5th house governs children, and it is worth reading alongside the marriage houses where a second marriage will bring children into a new household.
Factors that matter: the strength of the 5th house in both charts, Jupiter's placement as the significator of children, and whether the prospective spouse's chart shows ease or difficulty with step-relationships — read from the 5th house and its lord's condition.
Practically, the most useful thing astrology offers here is timing. Introducing children to a new marriage during a favourable Jupiter transit to the 5th house goes measurably more smoothly than during an adverse one, and where families have a choice about pacing, that is worth using.
