Through most of 2026 Rahu occupies Aquarius and Ketu occupies Leo. Virgo, Sagittarius, Aries and Taurus have the nodes in favourable houses. Leo and Aquarius carry the axis directly on themselves. Cancer and Capricorn have Rahu or Ketu in the difficult 8th house. The nodes move backwards, and they change sign roughly every eighteen months.

What Rahu and Ketu Actually Are
Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic — the lunar nodes — and they are always exactly opposite each other, 180 degrees apart. In Vedic astrology they are treated as full grahas and given enormous weight, because between them they govern karma: what you are compulsively drawn towards, and what you must release.
They are called shadow planets (chhaya graha) because they cast no light of their own. They operate through the planets and houses they occupy, amplifying or dissolving what is already there.
| Rahu (राहु) | Ketu (केतु) | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Desire, hunger, ambition, obsession | Detachment, renunciation, indifference |
| Gives | Sudden gain, foreign connection, fame, unconventional success | Depth, specialisation, spiritual insight, moksha |
| Takes | Clarity, contentment, ethical restraint | Interest, motivation, worldly attachment |
| Direction | Forward, outward, into the world | Backward, inward, away from the world |
| Body | The head without a body — appetite with no sense of limit | The body without a head — action with no desire |
| Deity | Durga, Bhairava | Ganesha, Bhairava |
| Day | Saturday (some traditions Wednesday) | Tuesday, Saturday |
The single most useful thing to understand: Rahu makes you want something badly and does not make you happy when you get it. Ketu makes you competent at something and removes your interest in it. Together they describe the axis along which your karma is working itself out in this life.
Where They Sit in 2026
Through most of 2026, Rahu transits Aquarius (Kumbh) and Ketu transits Leo (Simha).
Two features of nodal transits make them different from every other planet:
- They move backwards. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde, travelling in reverse through the zodiac. This is why they are associated with karma — they take you back over ground rather than forward.
- They change sign roughly every eighteen months, and they always change together, staying exactly opposite. The current placement has been running since 2025 and is due to shift towards the end of 2026, with Rahu moving into Capricorn and Ketu into Cancer. Confirm the exact ingress date from your panchang.
Because the nodal cycle is eighteen months rather than annual, this transit has been shaping the last year and a half and its effects are already familiar to most people reading this — the question is usually not what it will do but why it has been doing it.
As always, calculate from your Moon sign (Janma Rashi), not the Sun sign from your birth date.
How the Nodes Work — Two Rules
Most confusion about Rahu and Ketu disappears once these two rules are clear.
Rule one: they always work as a pair, on an axis. Because they sit exactly opposite, they activate two opposing houses at once and set them against each other. Rahu inflates one area of life while Ketu empties the other. For Leo natives in 2026, Ketu on the 1st house drains interest in the self while Rahu in the 7th inflates the importance of the partner — which is precisely the shape of the difficulty those natives report. Reading one node without the other gives half the picture.
Rule two: Rahu is not simply bad and Ketu is not simply good. Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house is genuinely constructive — it wins competitions, defeats enemies, raises careers and multiplies income. Ketu in the 3rd, 6th, 11th or 12th house is similarly useful. In the wrong houses both create real difficulty. Placement decides everything.
One further observation from practice, which the textbooks understate: Rahu's damage is usually self-inflicted. Rahu does not send misfortune so much as create a craving strong enough to override judgement. The losses that follow a Rahu transit are almost always traceable to a decision the native made while excited. Knowing which house Rahu occupies tells you exactly where not to trust your own enthusiasm this year.
Effect on All Twelve Moon Signs
| Moon sign | Rahu | Ketu | What this year does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 11th | 5th | Favourable. Income rises through networks. Avoid speculation and expect romance to feel flat. |
| Taurus | 10th | 4th | Favourable for career. Sudden visibility and promotion; home life feels unsettled. |
| Gemini | 9th | 3rd | Foreign opportunity and travel open; beliefs and the relationship with a father get shaken. |
| Cancer | 8th | 2nd | Caution. Joint finances, insurance and sudden events. Do not stand guarantor for anyone. |
| Leo | 7th | 1st | Hardest placement. Ketu on the sign drains identity; Rahu unsettles marriage. |
| Virgo | 6th | 12th | Best placement. Rahu defeats debt, rivals and disease. Foreign travel and spiritual practice open. |
| Libra | 5th | 11th | Speculation losses and unconventional romance. Friendships cool without a quarrel. |
| Scorpio | 4th | 10th | Home dissatisfaction and property disputes; career stops mattering emotionally. |
| Sagittarius | 3rd | 9th | Favourable. Courage and communication strengthen. Faith and a father feel distant. |
| Capricorn | 2nd | 8th | Speech becomes sharp, savings loosen; sudden events through others' money. |
| Aquarius | 1st | 7th | Rahu on the sign — restless ambition, changed appearance, confusion about identity and partner. |
| Pisces | 12th | 6th | Expenses and foreign matters rise; genuine spiritual depth. Ketu in the 6th defeats enemies. |
Where Rahu and Ketu Are Actually Good
This section exists because the fear around these two planets is disproportionate, and four Moon signs are currently benefiting from them.
Virgo has the best nodal placement of the twelve. Rahu in the 6th house is one of only two placements where Rahu performs at its best — the 6th house is enemies, debt, disease and competition, and Rahu there does not suffer those things but defeats them. Competitors falter, litigation resolves favourably, debts become clearable and recovery from illness is fast. Ketu in the 12th simultaneously supports genuine spiritual practice and foreign connection. Virgo natives in competitive fields often record their strongest years under this transit.
Sagittarius has Rahu in the 3rd house — the other genuinely strong Rahu placement. Courage, initiative, persuasion and communication all amplify. This favours sales, media, writing, negotiation and any work requiring you to push forward alone.
Aries has Rahu in the 11th house of income and gains, which multiplies earnings, often from sources that did not exist a year ago.
Taurus has Rahu in the 10th house of career, which produces sudden visibility, promotion and opportunities that stretch beyond current experience. The characteristic mistake is refusing them as too risky.
In each case the caution is the same and it is about behaviour, not luck: Rahu in a good house still exaggerates. Do not overpromise, do not claim credit that is not yours, and do not mistake momentum for a permanent state.
Kaal Sarp Dosha and the Transit
Kaal Sarp Dosha is formed in a birth chart when all seven visible planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. It is a natal condition, not a transit condition — so a nodal transit does not create Kaal Sarp Dosha in someone who does not have it.
What the transit does do is activate an existing dosha. Natives with Kaal Sarp in the birth chart typically feel nodal transits considerably more strongly than others, particularly when Rahu or Ketu crosses the Moon sign, the ascendant, or the natal position of either node. In 2026 that means Leo and Aquarius natives with Kaal Sarp should take remedies seriously rather than optionally.
If you have been told you have Kaal Sarp Dosha, the useful questions are which of the twelve types it is, whether it is ascending or descending, and whether your running dasha activates it — none of which a general article can answer. Our complete guide to Kaal Sarp Dosh covers the twelve types, and a chart reading settles whether yours is currently active.
Eclipses — The Nodes at Work
Eclipses happen only near the nodes, which is precisely why Rahu and Ketu are associated with them. A solar eclipse occurs when the New Moon falls close to a node; a lunar eclipse when the Full Moon does.
The signs most affected by any eclipse are the ones the eclipse falls in and its opposite — so during 2026, eclipses in Aquarius or Leo carry extra weight for those two Moon signs, and for anyone whose ascendant or important natal planets sit there.
Traditional practice around an eclipse is straightforward: do not begin anything new, avoid travel and major decisions during the eclipse hours, do not eat during the eclipse period, and use the time for mantra japa instead — the classical texts hold that mantras recited during an eclipse carry multiplied effect. Bathe afterwards and donate.
Pregnant women are traditionally advised to remain indoors during an eclipse. Whatever view one takes of the mechanism, the advice is harmless and universally followed in practice.
Health and the Nodes
The nodes produce a distinctive health signature that is worth recognising, because it wastes a great deal of medical time when it is not.
Rahu is associated with conditions that are sudden, hard to diagnose, or unusual — allergies, skin problems, poisoning, phobias, addiction, insomnia and anxiety disorders. The characteristic Rahu presentation is a real symptom with no clear cause; tests come back normal while the patient remains unwell.
Ketu is associated with depletion — low immunity, vague weakness, undiagnosable fatigue, and injuries or issues affecting the lower body and joints. Ketu on the Moon sign or ascendant commonly produces a year of feeling generally unwell without a diagnosis.
Signs to be most attentive in 2026: Leo (Ketu on the sign — vitality and immunity), Aquarius (Rahu on the sign — anxiety, sleep, skin), Cancer and Capricorn (nodes in the 8th house — sudden presentations, surgery).
The practical advice: pursue proper medical investigation, and do not treat a nodal placement as a reason to skip it. Where investigation genuinely finds nothing and symptoms persist, the traditional remedies below are worth adding alongside — not instead of — medical care.
Remedies for Rahu and Ketu
For Rahu
- Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa — Durga is the presiding deity for Rahu and this is the most effective ongoing remedy.
- Rahu beej mantra — ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः, 108 times, Saturdays.
- Donate black or dark blue cloth, black urad dal, mustard oil, coconut and sesame on Saturdays.
- Feed stray dogs — traditionally associated with Rahu, and among the simplest effective remedies.
- Behavioural, and most important: do not lie, do not exaggerate, avoid intoxicants, and refuse shortcuts. Rahu's difficulties come overwhelmingly through deception and impatience — including self-deception.
- Keep a silver square or a piece of coconut near where you sleep if insomnia is the presenting problem.
For Ketu
- Ganesh Atharvashirsha or Ganapati Atharvashirsha — Ganesha is Ketu's deity, and this is the primary remedy.
- Ketu beej mantra — ॐ स्रां स्रीं स्रौं सः केतवे नमः, 108 times, Tuesdays or Saturdays.
- Donate a grey or multicoloured blanket, sesame, and food to ascetics or at a temple.
- Keep a regular spiritual practice even when it feels meaningless. Ketu removes the reward from practice, not its value — and the natives who continue anyway pass through the transit best.
- Feed dogs, and care for an animal generally.
- For Magha, Ashwini and Mula natives — these are Ketu's own nakshatras. Pitru remedies and Pitra Dosh Nivaran carry extra weight during a Ketu transit.
For both
- Mahamrityunjaya mantra — general protection, particularly where a node sits on the Moon sign or in the 8th house.
- Bhairava worship on Saturdays or on Kaal Bhairav Ashtami. Bhairava governs both nodes.
- A Rahu-Ketu Shanti puja for natives with the axis on their sign — Leo and Aquarius in 2026 — or with an active Kaal Sarp Dosha.
Hessonite and Cat's Eye — Handle With Care
Rahu's gemstone is Hessonite (Gomed) and Ketu's is Cat's Eye (Lehsunia). Both belong in the same category as Blue Sapphire: powerful, fast-acting, and genuinely capable of harm when worn without a chart reading.
Neither stone pacifies its planet. Both strengthen it. Wearing Gomed when Rahu is already overactive amplifies exactly the restlessness, obsession and poor judgement you were trying to reduce. I see this often enough that my standing advice is simple: if you want a nodal remedy and have not had your chart read, use the mantras and donations, not the gemstones.
Where they are appropriate, the rules are strict — silver or panchdhatu setting, middle finger for Gomed and ring finger for Lehsunia, Saturday for Rahu and Tuesday or Saturday for Ketu, and never in combination with Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral or Yellow Sapphire. A three-day trial period is traditional and sensible.
Mistakes People Make
- Reading only one node. They work as an axis. Rahu's house and Ketu's house have to be read together or the picture is half wrong.
- Assuming Rahu is always harmful. In the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses it is one of the most useful transits available. Four Moon signs are currently benefiting.
- Trusting enthusiasm. Rahu's losses come from decisions made while excited, not from external misfortune. Whichever house Rahu occupies is where you should verify independently rather than act on instinct.
- Confusing the transit with Kaal Sarp Dosha. Kaal Sarp is a birth-chart condition. A nodal transit can activate an existing dosha but cannot create one.
- Wearing Gomed or Lehsunia on general advice. These are the two stones most likely to make matters worse without a proper reading.
A note on dates. The nodes shift sign roughly every eighteen months and are due to change towards the end of 2026, with Rahu moving to Capricorn and Ketu to Cancer. Confirm the exact date from your panchang. The house placements in this guide are what drive the interpretation while the current transit runs.

If you want a nodal remedy without that risk, use the mantras and donations instead."}, {"question":"What is the best remedy for Rahu and Ketu?","answer":"For Rahu, reciting Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa, feeding stray dogs, and donating black cloth and urad dal on Saturdays. Critically, Rahu's difficulties come mainly through deception and impatience, so honesty and refusing shortcuts do more than any ritual. For Ketu, Ganesh Atharvashirsha, donating a grey blanket, and maintaining a spiritual practice even when it feels meaningless. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra protects for both."}]
