A month is defined astrologically by the Sun changing sign — the Sankranti — plus one full lunar cycle and, usually, a Mercury or Venus sign change. That gives the month its theme. It is the right unit for financial planning and for knowing which area of life is lit up, but not for choosing a day.

What Defines an Astrological Month
The Gregorian month is an administrative convention. Astrologically, a month is defined by movement, and three things move on roughly a monthly scale.
| Movement | Period | What it governs in the month |
|---|---|---|
| Sun changes sign (Sankranti) | About 30 days | The month's theme — which house of your chart is illuminated |
| One lunar cycle | 29½ days | The rhythm — Amavasya, waxing, Purnima, waning |
| Mercury changes sign | 3 weeks to 2 months | Communication, business, trade, paperwork |
| Venus changes sign | About 1 month | Money, comfort, relationships, purchases |
| Mars changes sign | About 45 days | Energy, disputes, property — shifts every six weeks or so |
Note what is not on that list. Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu barely move within a month, so they cannot be what a monthly forecast is about — they belong to the annual and multi-year picture. A monthly horoscope that leads with Saturn is telling you about your year, not your month.
The Moon, conversely, moves too fast — it completes the whole zodiac within the month. It sets the rhythm rather than the theme.
Sankranti — The Sun's Monthly Move
Sankranti is the Sun's entry into a new sign, and it is the true beginning of an astrological month. There are twelve each year, of which Makar Sankranti — the Sun's entry into Capricorn in mid-January — is the most celebrated, marking the start of the Sun's northward journey, Uttarayan.
Why the Sun's position matters more than the calendar: the Sun signifies vitality, authority, reputation and the soul's focus. The house it occupies in your chart is the area of life that receives attention, energy and visibility that month — and equally, the area that demands effort.
The Sankranti day itself carries traditional observances. Charity given on a Sankranti is held to be especially meritorious, and the period of a few hours around the exact transition — the Punya Kaal — is used for donation, bathing in a holy river and ancestral offerings. New undertakings are traditionally avoided in the immediate hours around the transition itself.
The Sun Through Your Twelve Houses
Count from your Moon sign: when the Sun is in your own sign that is the 1st house, and so on. This is the single most useful thing in monthly forecasting.
| Sun in house | The month's theme | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, health, identity | Energy high but ego flares. Watch confrontation. Good for personal initiatives. |
| 2nd | Money, family, speech | Financial focus. Good for earning; guard your words. |
| 3rd | Courage, siblings, short travel | Strong month. Push, communicate, negotiate, travel. |
| 4th | Home, mother, property | Domestic focus. Health may dip. Poor for confrontation. |
| 5th | Children, education, creativity | Good for study, creative work, matters concerning children. |
| 6th | Debt, rivals, health, service | Strong for competition. Good for clearing debt and beating rivals; watch health. |
| 7th | Partnership, marriage, public | Others prominent. Health and energy lower. Good for negotiation. |
| 8th | Sudden events, joint money | Difficult month. Avoid new starts and joint financial commitments. |
| 9th | Fortune, father, travel, dharma | Favourable. Good for long travel, study, spiritual work. |
| 10th | Career, reputation, authority | Best career month. Visibility high. Ask, apply, present. |
| 11th | Income, gains, networks | Best financial month. Income, bonuses, networking. |
| 12th | Expenses, foreign, isolation | Expenses rise, energy dips. Rest. Avoid launches. |
The pattern: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are the Sun's strong monthly positions — these are the four months of your year to push hardest. The 8th and 12th are the two to hold back. Since the Sun takes a year to complete the cycle, each of these is one month out of twelve, and knowing which months they are for you is genuinely useful annual planning.
The Lunar Month and Its Two Halves
Inside the solar month runs the lunar cycle of 29½ days, and it supplies the month's rhythm.
- Amavasya (new moon) — the low point. Energy inward, traditionally avoided for beginnings and travel. The day for ancestral rites.
- Shukla Paksha (waxing, ~14 days) — the growing half. Favoured for beginnings, purchases, expansion, marriage and construction.
- Purnima (full moon) — the peak. Emotions and mental activity at their highest. Good for spiritual practice, charity and completion; poor for delicate negotiation.
- Krishna Paksha (waning, ~14 days) — the reducing half. Favoured for closure, settling debts, removal and breaking habits.
The practical monthly rhythm that follows: plan around Amavasya, launch in the waxing half, review at Purnima, close and settle in the waning half. A month organised that way works with the cycle rather than across it. Our weekly horoscope guide covers how the fortnights work at closer range.
Each lunar month also contains two Ekadashi, two Pradosh and one Sankashti Chaturthi — the recurring observance days worth marking in a calendar.
Mercury, Venus and Mars
These three are what distinguish one month from the next beyond the Sun, and a good monthly forecast tracks them.
Mercury (Budh) stays in a sign anywhere from three weeks to two months, depending on speed and retrograde motion. It governs communication, commerce, contracts, accounts, travel and paperwork. A Mercury sign change shifts which area of your life those matters concern. Mercury is never far from the Sun, so it is often in the same or an adjacent house.
Venus (Shukra) takes about a month per sign, making it the second most useful monthly indicator. Venus governs money, comfort, relationships, purchases, vehicles, jewellery and the arts. When Venus transits your 2nd or 11th house, that is the month for financial matters; the 7th, for relationships; the 4th, for home comfort and vehicles.
Mars (Mangal) takes about 45 days, so it changes roughly every six weeks. Mars governs energy, disputes, property, litigation, surgery and physical effort. Mars in your 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house gives drive; in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 8th it tends to produce conflict and accidents. Mars transits are worth knowing for anyone with Manglik dosha.
A practical shortcut: if your month feels financially tight, check Venus. If communication and paperwork are going wrong, check Mercury. If you are unusually irritable or accident-prone, check Mars.
Retrogrades Within a Month
Retrograde motion — a planet appearing to move backwards — matters at the monthly scale for Mercury, Venus and Mars.
| Planet | Retrograde frequency | Duration | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 3–4 times a year | About 3 weeks | Miscommunication, technical failures, delayed paperwork, travel disruption |
| Venus | Every 18 months | About 6 weeks | Relationship review, poor timing for marriage and major purchases |
| Mars | Every 2 years | 2–3 months | Frustrated energy, stalled disputes, poor timing for surgery |
Mercury retrograde is the one most people have heard of and the one most exaggerated. What it reliably does: paperwork takes longer, messages get misread, and things you thought were settled need redoing. What it does not do: ruin your month. It is a poor window for signing and launching, and a good one for reviewing, editing, revisiting and reconnecting.
Venus retrograde is less frequent and more consequential for the matters this practice is most often asked about. Traditionally it is avoided for marriage, engagement, buying jewellery or vehicles, and cosmetic procedures. See our Venus retrograde guide for the detail.
Confirm current retrograde windows from a panchang — they shift each year and cannot be assumed.
The Twelve Hindu Months
The Hindu lunar calendar names each month after the nakshatra in which the full moon falls, and each carries its own character and festivals. This is what a traditional monthly forecast is anchored to.
| Month | Roughly | Character and main observances |
|---|---|---|
| Chaitra | Mar–Apr | New year. Gudi Padwa, Chaitra Navratri, Ram Navami. Beginnings favoured. |
| Vaishakh | Apr–May | Akshaya Tritiya — anything begun is held to be inexhaustible. Buddha Purnima. |
| Jyeshtha | May–Jun | Hottest. Ganga Dussehra, Nirjala Ekadashi, Vat Savitri. |
| Ashadha | Jun–Jul | Guru Purnima, Jagannath Rath Yatra. Marriage season pauses. |
| Shravan | Jul–Aug | Most sacred to Shiva. Shravan Mondays, Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan. |
| Bhadrapada | Aug–Sep | Ganesh Chaturthi, Hartalika Teej, then Pitru Paksha. |
| Ashwin | Sep–Oct | Sharad Navratri, Dussehra. Highly auspicious for beginnings. |
| Kartik | Oct–Nov | Diwali, Dhanteras, Chhath, Tulsi Vivah. The most auspicious month. |
| Margashirsha | Nov–Dec | Gita Jayanti, Vivah Panchami. Marriage season resumes. |
| Paush | Dec–Jan | Makar Sankranti. Traditionally avoided for marriage. |
| Magha | Jan–Feb | Vasant Panchami, Magh Purnima, Mauni Amavasya. Bathing and charity. |
| Phalguna | Feb–Mar | Mahashivratri, Holi. The year closes. |
Two months are traditionally avoided for auspicious beginnings and marriage: Paush and the Pitru Paksha fortnight within Bhadrapada. Kartik and Ashwin are the most favoured.
Adhik Maas and Kshaya Maas
The lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, and the Hindu calendar corrects for this by inserting an extra month roughly every 32 to 33 months.
Adhik Maas — also called Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas — is that intercalary month. Its character is specific and worth knowing: auspicious new undertakings are traditionally avoided throughout it. No marriages, no house-warmings, no business launches, no new purchases of significance.
What it is for is spiritual practice. Adhik Maas is regarded as exceptionally meritorious for charity, fasting, recitation and pilgrimage — the classical texts hold that acts of devotion performed in this month carry multiplied effect. Clients often find this frustrating when a wedding falls in it; the tradition is fairly firm.
Kshaya Maas, a month that is skipped entirely, is rare — occurring roughly once in 140 years — and is unlikely to affect your planning.
Check whether an Adhik Maas falls in the year before fixing any major date. It is the commonest reason a family finds no auspicious wedding dates available for a stretch of weeks.
How to Plan a Month
The routine I recommend, taking about ten minutes at each Sankranti or new moon.
- Find which house the Sun has entered from your Moon sign. That is your month's theme. If it is the 10th or 11th, this is a push month. If the 8th or 12th, plan conservatively.
- Note Amavasya and Purnima dates. Avoid launches near Amavasya; avoid delicate negotiation near Purnima.
- Check Venus's house. If it is in your 2nd or 11th, put financial matters here. If your 7th, relationship matters.
- Check for retrogrades. If Mercury is retrograde, do not schedule signings or launches in that window — use it to review and revisit instead.
- Mark your Chandrashtama days — the two days the Moon crosses your 8th sign. Keep them light.
- Identify your one push week and place the month's most important work in it.
- Check for Adhik Maas and any festival period that blocks auspicious work.
Used consistently, this is genuinely effective — not because it changes outcomes dramatically but because it stops you scheduling your hardest work in your weakest fortnight.
What a Monthly Horoscope Cannot Tell You
Said plainly, as with the daily and weekly versions.
The dasha decides, the transit modulates. Your running Vimshottari dasha sets the character of this phase of your life over years. A favourable Sun transit during an adverse dasha gives a better month within a difficult period. It does not change the direction. This is the reason monthly forecasts feel accurate to some people and empty to others reading the same words — the difference is the dasha, which no general forecast can see.
Monthly forecasts give themes, not timings. They tell you that this is a financial month. They cannot tell you which day to sign. For that you need the weekly and daily layer, or a proper Muhurat.
A monthly horoscope addresses one twelfth of the population. It cannot account for your ascendant, your natal placements or the strength of the planets in your own chart. Everything here is a framework — sound as far as it goes, and general.
Do not stack forecasts. The commonest error I see is clients reading their annual, monthly, weekly and daily horoscope and then trying to reconcile four different messages into one prediction. Read the annual for direction, the monthly for theme, the weekly for planning, and stop there.
