What Free Software Genuinely Does Well

Let me start here, because most articles on this topic are written to make free tools sound useless. They are not.

The calculation layer is solved. Planetary positions come from the same ephemeris data professional astrologers use — commonly the Swiss Ephemeris, derived from JPL's planetary data. A free app and a paid consultation are working from identical numbers.

So free software reliably gives you:

• Accurate planetary longitudes and house placements
• Your ascendant, given a correct birth time
• Vimshottari dasha periods — the full sequence, correctly calculated
• Divisional charts including the Navamsa
• Yoga detection — it can spot the pattern
• Ashtakavarga tables and transit positions

I use software for exactly this. No astrologer computes positions by hand any more, and anyone claiming their calculations are more accurate than the ephemeris is mistaken.

Where It Breaks Down

The gap is not in calculation. It is in judgement — and this is where the free report stops being useful.

A chart contains dozens of factors that qualify one another. Reading it means deciding, for each question asked, which factors dominate, which are neutralised, and which are irrelevant. That is a weighing problem, and rule-based software cannot weigh.

What it produces instead is a concatenation: for each detected condition, it prints the paragraph attached to that condition. The paragraphs do not know about each other.

So a free report will cheerfully tell you on one page that you will have a highly successful career, and on another that you will face persistent professional obstruction — because two different rules fired and each has its own stock text. Neither paragraph is wrong in isolation. The report simply has no mechanism for deciding which one governs.

The Contradiction Problem

This is worth a concrete example, because it is the single clearest illustration.

Suppose a chart has a strong Raj Yoga involving the 10th house — a genuine indicator of professional rise. It also has Saturn afflicting the 10th lord, and the person is running a Saturn Mahadasha.

The free report says both things. "You are destined for authority and recognition." And, elsewhere, "Your career will face repeated delays and obstacles."

An astrologer reading that chart resolves it: the Raj Yoga is real but its full expression waits for the dasha that activates it; the current Saturn period is a consolidation phase where the groundwork is laid but recognition lags. That is a coherent, actionable reading. It tells you to keep building and not to interpret the current stagnation as a verdict on your capability.

The free report gives you both halves and no reconciliation — which typically leaves people more anxious than before they looked.

Resolving contradictions is most of the skill. It is also precisely what cannot be automated with stock paragraphs.

The Birth-Time Problem

Here is a practical issue free tools handle poorly, and it undermines everything downstream.

The ascendant changes roughly every two hours. Every house placement in your chart is measured from it. An hour's error moves planets between houses and changes the reading materially. Manglik status, marriage indications, career houses — all of it shifts.

Many people do not know their birth time precisely. Hospital records, family memory and birth certificates frequently disagree, and "around 5 in the morning" is not good enough for a 7th-house question.

A free app takes whatever you type and produces a confident, detailed report from it. It has no way to flag that your ascendant is borderline, and no procedure for resolving it.

Why Two Apps Give Different Charts

A common and disorienting experience: two free tools give you different Moon signs or different dasha dates.

The usual cause is ayanamsa — the correction between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Vedic astrology is sidereal, and several ayanamsa values are in use. Lahiri is the Indian government standard and the most widely used, but Raman, KP and Krishnamurti variants all exist and differ by enough to move a planet across a sign boundary.

A second cause is house system. Whole Sign and Placidus place the same planets in different houses.

Neither app is broken. They made different, defensible choices and did not tell you. If two readings disagree, check the ayanamsa before concluding one is wrong — and know that a practitioner should be able to tell you which they use and why.

How the Generic Text Is Produced

Worth understanding, because it explains the flat, slightly uncanny quality of free reports.

The software detects a condition — Mars in the 7th, say — and prints the paragraph stored against that condition. That paragraph was written once, for everyone with Mars in the 7th, without knowledge of the sign, the aspects, the dasha, or anything else in your chart.

So the text is accurate at the level of the rule and useless at the level of your life. It is why a free report can run to forty pages and still not answer the one question you opened it for.

The length is not depth. It is the number of rules that fired.

Kundli Analysis Online with AI: What It Can and Cannot Do

Many sites now sell an "AI kundli analysis", and many people paste their birth details into a general chatbot and ask it to read their chart. These are two different things. Each fails in its own way.

The first kind is the rule-based report described above with a new label. If the output is a long PDF of stock paragraphs, one per detected placement, the "AI" is the same concatenation engine. Everything in the sections above applies to it.

The second kind is a language model chatbot. This is genuinely different. It writes fluent, connected prose and can relate one placement to another, so it does not produce the jarring page-by-page contradictions of a stock report. That is a real improvement in readability. It is not the same as an improvement in judgement, and there are four specific problems to know about.

1. It may not calculate your chart at all. A chatbot that is not connected to an ephemeris can produce planetary positions that look plausible but were never computed. Unless the tool says it uses a calculation engine, assume it did not. Generate the chart with a proper calculator first, check it, and give the chatbot the positions rather than the birth details. 2. It may not tell you its settings. Ayanamsa and house system decide which sign and house a planet falls in. Unless you specify Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses, you do not know what it assumed.
3. Its answers shift with the wording. Ask the same question twice, or phrase it hopefully and then anxiously, and you can get different readings. A language model tends to lean toward the framing of the question. A worried question often gets a worried answer.
4. Fluency sounds like confidence. A well-written paragraph feels authoritative whether or not it is correct, and the tool will rarely volunteer that your birth time looks borderline or that a factor is too weak to matter.

How to use AI sensibly. It is useful as a tutor. Paste in your verified positions and ask it to explain what a term means, what the 10th house governs, or how a dasha sequence works. Ask it to list the factors that point in different directions, rather than to give you a verdict. Do not take gemstone, health or financial instructions from it. Those need someone who has seen your whole chart and will stand behind what they said.

A note on privacy. Your birth date, exact time and place, together with your name, identify you. Before typing them into any website or chatbot, read what it says it does with that data.

When Free Is Genuinely Enough

I would rather you spent nothing than spent badly. Free software is the right tool when:

• You want your chart — positions, ascendant, dasha sequence
• You are learning and want to practise reading placements
• You want to check a factual claim someone made about your chart
• You need today's transits or a panchang
• You are curious rather than facing a decision
• You want a second opinion on a calculation — entirely reasonable

None of that needs a consultation, and anyone telling you it does is selling.

When It Is Not

A reading earns its cost when the question involves weighing, timing or a decision:

• A specific decision with a deadline — accepting an offer, agreeing to a match, committing to a purchase
• Contradictory indications you cannot reconcile
• Marriage matching, where the 7th house, Venus, the Navamsa and Manglik cancellations all interact and a raw score misleads
• Timing — when a period opens or closes

First, separate two questions that families often merge. "What does my chart say about marriage?" is a reading of one kundli: whether marriage is indicated, when the supportive periods fall, what kind of partnership the chart describes, and whether anything is causing delay. The order matters. A careful reading establishes the promise first: is marriage clearly indicated, and is anything obstructing it? Only then does it look at timing, because a supportive dasha cannot deliver what the chart does not promise, and a strong promise can still wait for the right period. Many astrologers then use a transit check, often called the double transit, where Jupiter and Saturn both influence the 7th house or its lord, to narrow the window further. The nature of the partnership and any remedies come last.

This is where the contradiction problem from earlier shows up most sharply. A free report may say "early marriage" because Venus is strong and "delayed marriage" because Saturn aspects the 7th house, both on the same page. A reading has to decide which one governs in your chart, and why. It describes tendencies and supportive periods; the decisions stay with you and your family. Where a delay has a practical cause, such as health, finances or family circumstances, that cause needs a practical answer, and where fertility or health is part of the worry, a doctor comes first and any astrological remedy sits alongside medical advice, never in place of it.

Career is the second most common reason people move beyond a free report, and the free report fails here in a predictable way: it maps planets to professions too literally. "Mars in the 10th: police, army, surgeon, engineer." A list like that is a starting point at best, and it ignores your education, your skills and the work that actually exists around you.

A career-focused kundli analysis works through the chart in layers.

From planet to field, not planet to job title. A strong Mercury does not mean "accountant". It points to work built on analysis, language, trade or communication, which might be accounting, writing, sales, software or teaching. The reading narrows that field using the sign, the houses involved and what you have actually trained for. The questions it handles well are timing and direction: whether the coming dasha favours a move or consolidation, whether the chart leans toward a job or a business, and why a period of stagnation is happening. That last one is often the most useful. Knowing that a slow phase is tied to a dasha that ends in a known year changes how you spend it.

What it cannot tell you. It cannot say whether you will clear a particular exam, get a particular job or be promoted on a particular date. It should never be the only reason to resign, and it does not replace a career counsellor, a mentor in your field or an honest look at your skills and the job market. Use it alongside those, not instead of them.

Free reports usually answer money questions by finding a Dhan Yoga and announcing wealth. That skips the useful part. A chart can show strong earning and weak saving at the same time, and the question that matters is usually which of the two is causing the trouble.

A money-focused analysis therefore separates the question into parts, each read from different houses.

Dhan Yogas are the start, not the answer. Classical texts describe wealth combinations formed when the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses connect, and Jupiter is read as the general significator of wealth. Patterns a reading looks for. A strong 11th with a heavily occupied 12th often describes someone who earns well and spends as fast. A strong 2nd with a modest 11th can describe steady saving from an ordinary income. A difficult 6th-house period often coincides with taking on loans. These are tendencies to check against your actual finances, not verdicts.

What it cannot tell you. A kundli cannot pick a stock, time the market, predict a lottery or tell you which investment to make. Love life is mainly a 5th-house question: attraction, romance, courtship and the feelings that come before any commitment. A free report usually blurs the two, which is why it can describe a "happy married life" while saying nothing useful to someone whose actual worry is a relationship that keeps going wrong.

A love-focused reading looks at these factors, and the questions each one helps with.

The useful questions are about patterns. "Why do my relationships end at the same stage?" "Is this a period for meeting someone, or for settling what I already have?" A reading also does not replace a conversation with your partner, and if a relationship involves fear, threats or harm, the first call is to someone you trust or to the police, not to an astrologer. These are timing and stability questions, and the chart answers them from a slightly different set of houses.

The 6th house carries most of the weight. Classically it is the house of service: working under someone, daily duties, competition and colleagues. The 10th house describes the work and its status, the 6th describes the experience of being employed, and the 11th shows income and whether effort turns into gains. Reading a job question without the 6th is like reading a marriage question without the 7th.

Timing is where a reading earns its fee. A free app will list the whole dasha sequence, but a job question needs the sub-period (antardasha) and the transits read together. A Saturn dasha does not mean "no job". It often describes slow progress, hard work and a role that becomes stable only after a long trial. It describes an inclination, not a selection. Exams are cleared through preparation, and no chart replaces the syllabus.

What a job analysis cannot tell you. It cannot say that you will get a particular job, clear a particular interview or exam, or be promoted on a given date. It should never be the only reason to resign before you have another offer, or to turn down a job you need. Use it to understand which periods favour movement and which call for patience, alongside your skills, your network and the job market. What to Ask Before Paying Anyone

Since you are considering paying someone — me or anyone else — here is how to judge.

• Do they ask for your exact birth time and place? Anyone reading from a date alone is not doing Vedic astrology.
• Will they tell you which ayanamsa and house system they use? A competent practitioner answers immediately.
• Do they explain their reasoning, or only deliver conclusions? You should be able to follow why they said what they said.
• Will they say "I don't know" or "that doesn't apply to you"? Someone who finds a dosha in every chart is finding what they sell.
• Are the remedies proportionate? Mantras, donation and fasting cost almost nothing. Be cautious of large sums to "remove" anything.
• Do they make guarantees? Nobody can promise a marriage, a job or a cure. A guarantee is a warning sign.
• Do they defer to doctors on medical matters? They should, without hesitation.

An Honest Note on Incentive
