Earthen lamps are lit by the people to spread light and remove darkness from their life. Lamps are also lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, as it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi becomes more merciful on the day of Deepawali. On this day lamps are lit by the people to welcome peace, prosperity and wealth in their life. It is also believed that during evening hours burning an earthen lamp with four wicks on the lamp,  bring good luck and it is also believed that this indicates four goals of life.

It is considered that blessings of Goddess Lakshmi can elevate the status and honour of a person and bless him with peace, prosperity and wealth.

The festival of Deepwali also marks the return of Lord Rama from exile of 14 years.
