Union of Shiva and Shakti: – After the death of Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva did intense and severe penance. He went into deep meditation and undertook severe penance. Samudra Manthan – During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), a pot of poison emerged out of it. This poison was extremely toxic and had the power to destroy the universe. To save his creation, Lord Shiva drank the poison that turned his throat blue. He then had to stay awake the whole night to save himself from the effects of the poison. Story of Lubdhaka– Lubdhaka, a tribal man and a devout worshipper of Lord Shiva went to the deep forest to collect firewood. He lost his way and decided to spend the night in the jungle atop the bilva tree. To stay awake, he plucked the bilva leaves and kept dropping them on the ground while chanting Shiva’s name. By sunrise, he noticed he had dropped thousands of leaves on a Shiva Lingam kept near the tree, that he’d failed to notice at night. Lord Shiva was pleased with his devotion and blessed him. Mother Parvati was keen to marry Lord Shiva. All the deities were also of the same opinion that Parvati, the mountain princess, should be married to Shiva. The gods sent Kandarpa to help Parvati. But Shiva consumed them with his third eye. Now Parvati had decided that if she would marry only Bholenath, Mother Parvati started a very severe penance to make Shiva her bridegroom, due to her penance, there was an outcry everywhere. The foundations of the great mountains began to shake. Seeing this, Bhole Baba opened his eyes and appealed to Parvati to marry a prosperous prince. Shiva also emphasized that living with an ascetic is not easy. But Mother Parvati was adamant, she had made it clear that she would marry only Lord Shiva. Maha Shivratri Special 2022
Now seeing this insistence of Parvati, Bholenath melted and agreed to marry her. Shiva felt that Parvati was as stubborn as him, so this pair would be good. Now the wedding preparations started in full swing. But the problem was that Lord Shiva was an ascetic and had no family members. But the belief was that a groom has to go with his family and ask for the hand of the bride. Now in such a situation, Lord Shiva decided to take Dakinis, ghosts and witches along with him. Being an ascetic, Shiva was not aware of how to prepare for marriage. So their maidens and witches decorated them with ashes and garlanded them with bones. The women standing there also ran away in fear. Parvati’s mother could not accept Lord Shiva in this strange form and she refused to give her daughter’s hand. Seeing the deteriorating conditions, Parvati prayed to Shiva, he came prepared according to their customs. Shiva accepted their prayer and ordered all the deities that they got into their beautiful act and started preparing them. Lord Shiva was bathed with divine water and decorated with silk flowers. Within a short time, Bholenath started looking more beautiful than Kandarp and his fairness was even beating the light of the moon. When Lord Shiva arrived in this divine form, Parvati’s mother immediately accepted him and the marriage ceremony began in the presence of Brahma.
